On the water with my boy and his new pots *upd with pics*
Hi, it's been a LONG time since I posted.
Yesterday, after a lot of pestering from my little offsider, I bought my 3 year old son four shiny new crab pots and we set off today to see how they compared to the old man's rusty and hole ridden set. Set them late on the rising tide with chicken frames the only bait at hand. I looked for likely looking spots in the creek and on checking them, caught at least 1 crab in every pot on every run. We managed two good keepers today in a couple of hours, but released plenty of females and undersized males. I'll let the pots soak overnight to see how we go and fingers crossed they are all still there tomorrow because he was almost in tears leaving them behind. Hopefully he'll learn.
We also had a quick fish between runs using bait - threw the cast net for a couple of small prawns and a few poddy mullet. ( I think the prawns will be on in a month or so - these were not big but there were loads of them up the creek). Found a nice hole/drop off and found some unlucky grunter, tailor (+ catfish for the pots). I'll hopefully post a few pictures tomorrow of a nice feed of ????.
The little fella loves his fishing and with me having some holidays we'll hit the water together over the Christmas break & hopefully post some reports. Stay tuned.
I'm not on the same level as Justjack, BUT, following up on my earlier report, it was worth leaving the pots in overnight to soak. Five keepers and plenty of throw backs. Undersized males outnumbered the females and keepers - so maybe worth hitting them up again in a month or two?
It was a good fun day with my boy. Not much time devoted to fishing this time due to the heat/humidity combined with the little fella's impatience with wanting to check the pots. I intended on keeping them in for another night but five crabs is plenty for us, so I hauled them in.
