New salt x thread...flushing outboards

Its been a while since a Salt x thread. A couple of people have claimed in the past on this site its snake oil, others saying they are dubious, others saying its great.

I have had a bottle for several years and used it a few times on my old motor. Now I have the 99 model 115 Yam I am looking at using it when the motor is warm and leaving a coating as the product says to do. I did a bit of a test today sticking about a teaspoon full of large sea salt rocks (ie all like small gravel) in a glass with some diluted Salt x 50 solution and it dissolved of its own over the course of several hours...I will do the same with water now and see what that does.

I forget the name of the product I used on my brand new 50Hp Johno in 2000, I remember I drove to Maroochydore to get it. When I sold the boat & Motor in 2005, I was told by the service mechanics the insides were like brand new with absolutely no signs of corrosion watsoever.

I had forgotten about that but now I have an 85 Yammy and will see if I can get the same and treat this motor. Just have to google and try to remember the name of the stuff.

I probably said 'snake oil' last find round and will say likewise again.

Outboard manufacturers coat their alloys with corrosion resistant coatings and proper flushing after use is all that's needed for years of corrosion free boating.

However, if people derive a placebo effect from using such substances then that's cool also.

Thanks Nick - I would not use it for the placebo effect...I dont want to kid myself...its a little painful to use in terms of having to suck it up out of a bottle using venturi effect (I have the brass fitting and rubber tube not the all in one placcy bottle they now sell). So I will only bother if it works.

I know that manufacturer's coat the inside of motors with pretty amazing stuff - teflon like material I understand, but the question is, does it help? Does it dissolve salt more than water alone in the motor, and if so thats all the answer I need...cause not having salt sitting against thermostats and that special coating must be a good thing.

I think that a flush with fresh water within 6 hours of getting the boat out of the water will remove all the salt. Leave the motor for a day and it will start to evaporate out and crystalise then you will need longer flush times.
I am yet to use the product, but after pulling down my last motor that was 11 yrs old and flushed always soon after a run, I found no salt buildup and very minimal corrosion marks (nothing worth attending to). Regular flushing after each trip will do the job nicely.

The product may well work, and I think that a bit thrown into the bilge of alloy boats would be beneficial as it is hard to clean those areas effectively.

Ive seen a DF 140 suzuki pulled down after the brisbane floods and the water jackets werent looking to good,i could not see that atleast suzuki had a special coating and after seeing this motor i went out and bought a similar product to run through the motor.

Quick question, how long do most of you guys flush the motor for?

10 mins or so for me. Sometimes longer. Cheers

Now I have a fresh water flush point I will do the muffs for 10 mins and then fresh water flush for another 10-15 cheers

I flush the motor for about 10 mins and then turn it off and put 100ml of MAC's (similar stuff) in and as soon as i see it come out the pee hole i turn the motor off as to keep as strong a concentration in the motor as possible. Might be bullshit, might not, don't know but i will keep it up as i have been doing it since i got it. Time will tell i guess.
