The only place I know, although a bit of a drive from where you are, that regularly is a viable option is the weedbanks on the inside of Moreton Island. Bulwer is the prime spot.
All the best.

I have caught a few on the close in reefs around mooloolaba using pillies slid over the stainless barbs. These are big squid and look sensational, I caught a few off Amity Point this week on straddie. I have found they are a bit tough to eat but fresh are a crazy bait.
Do you put the pillies on something like a snapper rig with the squid barbs so it is close to the bottom or float it down....?
I use to see the cruising the rock ledges off bullcock beach/ the boardwalk I also see them cruising the edges of the rocks at la balsa at high tide. Normally in packs of 2-3
Gonna have to check out the spots as well.... I have often wondered about squid in the Caloundra area have caught a of flukey ones offshore before (which transformed into spotty macks next cast
Has to be something around though..... seed has been planted.
Thanks guys for the replies
I will be out over Xmas with a few squid jigs then, and hopefully catch a few for bait and to eat.
i dont spose there is a season for squid?
and the smaller they are the less chewy.

I am not sure of the correct name for the jigs but they look like a normal squid jig with no body on it you will see them in your local tackle shop for about $5 for 2. but in saying this I had a bet with a mate when at straddie and he caught same amount of squid using conventional jig as I was pre occupied keeping my bait away from dolphins and small fish.
The best adivce for squid is when on the reef and put the odd pilly on you gang or snood pointed down some say the snapper hook up is better this way and if you check you bait and notice the back of the head is chewed lightly you got squid around.
I have dived around Caloundra headland many years ago and regularly saw squid around the reefs there, ONLY in calm conditions. Yet to see a squid close to shore in rough or choppy conditions.
Noosa Sound also gets good numbers of big tiger squid right in the middle of winter. A mate and myself early one morning scored over a dozen big tigers off the pontoon behind the waterfront restaurant on a chilly morning. We were casting out the yo-zuri squid jigs in orange colour.
Have also caught quite a few between the Mooloolaba boat ramp and the end of the breakwall on the southern side of the river. Very snaggy there too.
Another spot that produces in very calm weather is directly in front of the Noosa National Park car park over all of those boulders at high tide. Smaller jigs with a small pencil float works best there to keep the jig above the stones.
Jack.
I use to get plenty of them here every year until Easter (they'd start moving to western bay shores when it started to get cold) but last year after the floods I struggled to get 1 or 2, I think a lot of the weed beds died or were covered. Anyone heard a report about squid from the inside of Moreton so far this summer?
Cheers

can you still catch squid in summer?? sorry i dont know much about squid fishing but some people tell me you cant catch them in summer as to why i have stop trying to catch them
cheers
mike been catching plenty of squid over the inside of moreton in the last few months. they are about all year round however you get a better run on them in winter.
Dean as for squidding up the sunny coast i have never done it before we have had massive squid follow fish up on the gneerings and am told that they catch them around the shallow reefs at old woman regulary. a spot i want to try is the northern side of the north rockwall at the spit mooloolaba the ground there is perfect territory for squid 1 - 2 mtrs lots of rubble and weed. have been wanting to get up there one night with a spotty on the boat and give it a go. just not found the time yet.
