Thread: Name a local extinct species.

    Name a local extinct species.

We all hear about the mammals and birds that are no longer present in each of our localities.
Why do we not hear of fish, or crustaceans that are no longer in our localities?

What species of fish no longer is found in your area, that you know was there before?

I will kick it off with sole in the Brighton to Clontarf area, haven't seen one in decades now but were once common. Not Flounder, they are still present.

Let's see what sort of list can be compiled.

Up in CQ we used to catch a lot of Wiretooth but they are very rare now, as it was you could only get them in a couple of locations but in good numbers.

There is a few freshwater fish i can think of, especially around brisbane. rainbow fish used to be brisbane creeks. i remember trying to net them.

while certaintly not extinct or even threatened or whatever but one saltwater fish i used to catch in the piney alot with me dad when i was young was trumpeter. we didnt really think of them of a target fish but i havnt caught one in ages. maybe its because i dont fish with bait much these days but i havent seen these blighters around since mid eighties or so.

Re: Name a local extinct species.

Most extinctions are caused by loss of habitat or by the actions of invasive species (competition or predation). We don't have the any comparable loss of habitat in the aquatic environment to the vast amount of land clearing that has occurred in Australia for farming and grazing. However the changes that have resulted in our streams due to changes in water flow (dams, weirs, irrigation), increased sediment loads and chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) have greatly reduced populations of fish that require natural flooding to complete their life cycles. It is likely that these changes have caused the extinction of smaller fish and invertebrates that we never even knew about, especially those with a very restricted habitat.
Invasive species can have a much more visible effect, as the domestic cat, the fox and the rabbit have had on land. The aquatic equivalent are such things as Tilapias and carp. They could (and may have already) out-compete local species causing their extinction. They represent a real danger to our freshwater ecosystems.

Reading some old journals a while ago, very interesting.
Jungle perch used to be very common from Cape York all the way down to Coffs Harbour. Very heavy populations were recorded in the Maroochy river........

Re: Name a local extinct species.

When I was growing up I used to fish the freshwater creeks out the back of Goodna and Redbank. I use to love catching the ol eel tailed catty, it wasn't a common catch (turtles, eels and carp were though) and used to love getting one out of a skinny creek only a meter or so across. Used to sneak on to a property that had a creek wandering through it and fish it regularly, even 'camping out' there some nights with a mate or 2, we loved it. One day the ol bloke that owned the property caught us, he'd known for awhile we were going there but just wanted to talk with us as we weren't damaging anything. Told us about when he was a young fella and the variety of fish he used to pull out of the local waterways, made my liking of the eel tailed catty seem silly( and made me a bit sad at the same time). Most of those creeks etc are now filled in, the bushland dozered down and houses built there. Sorry to digress, this thread reminded me of those days.

Brisbane River Cod where once prevalent in the freshwater reaches of the river. They where once fed to pigs when bag limits never existed. Due to overfishing and habitat destruction they are now extinct.
