Only got time for a quick squiz atm; this concerned me somewhat......

"Fishers For Conservation has today rejected the notion that all recreational fishers are opposed to marine protected areas, following the NSW Shooters Party’s introduction of a Bill to place a five year moratorium on the creation of new marine parks, and changes to sanctuary areas within existing marine parks. Shooters Party MP Robert Brown has cited the need for more science on marine parks as justification for this moratorium but Fishers for Conservation believes the science is in – marine parks are an important part of protecting our fishing future."

I do need more time to suss the whole shooting match though..........

Yes guys I am a tad confused.

    Why ?

    well.

we have Marine Protected Areas, Marine Conservations Zones, Marine Reserves, AFA, Bio-regional Zones, Commonwealth Waters, State Waters, World Heritage listed areas, Port and Harbour protected areas, Marine Parks and within those areas we have several sub-zonings.

    Greetings Lucky

Josh Coates the main person on that site has often extolled the virtues of sanctuary zones for the 'Wilderness Society'. Says it all for me.

There ARE fishers who think 'no take' areas where fish can go and hide from anglers is a good idea. Various groups, ie Prof. Kearney, Ben Diggles et al, have been trying to set them straight for 5 years.

The various Departments of Fisheries are much more pragmatic managers than Dept of Environment, etc.

Hopefully this isn't some 'divide and rule' scheme; I'd really like to have the Shooters and Fishers around for a while in NSW. I have no problems at all giving them my vote.

I'm seriously scratching my head as to why they consider that a 'celebrity' endorsement? doesn't say much for them if that's the best pulling power they got...

LP. Not sure if you read this. The website is anti arti reefs.

    "
    Artificial reefs:
Some recreational fishing groups in Australia have argued that the addition of artificial reefs in depleted waters can produce better recreational fishing, and artificial reefs have been placed in areas around marine parks (such as the Great Barrier Reef MPA) as a means of compensation for lost fishing grounds to recreational fishos. A reef itself does not produce more fish unless there is a severe shortage of available habitat; but aggregates existing fish so that they are easier to catch. A review of scientific research shows that artificial reefs can potentially reduce reef fish populations. If making the existing fish stocks easier to catch is desirable, then artificial reefs can benefit recreational fishing. This could do more damage to dwindling stocks in the long term because it is only making it easier to catch the remaining fish.
    "
    This was taken from http://www.ffc.org.au/WA_marine_park...ter_Ideas.html

The link from their website to the scientific research is a dead link, which is a shame as i would like to have read it. I have read other information related to this topic before.

So this is talking about placing artis around marine parks, that contain massive areas of reef, that are huge. The following sentence provides valuable insight into the author's thought process and bias.

"This could do more damage to dwindling stocks in the long term because it is only making it easier to catch the remaining fish."

WTF? Last time i checked, there was not "a severe shortage of available habitat within the GBRMP.

So a couple of artificial reefs, what .000000000000000000000000000000000001% the size of the marine park has the ability to destroy all remaining fish that live within the massive protected area, as all the fish are going to line up in single file, have a mass orgie ontop of a piss ant sized arti, where redneck fishermen will slaughter all living things, killing all the remaining fish.

    Jebus....

I dont think the author was mentioned on the page, which again, is a shame. There are some noble causes put forth on the website LP posted, however views like the one highlighted above do nothing for their credibility IMO and make me think that this is more about stoping recreational fishing than preserving/enhancing it.

Re: Concerned fishos. When you get 20 minutes.

Rec fishing is a pastime for us all however some of the legislation they have supported the coalition on has made that less affordable for some.

I guess that's the risk when niche parties whether it be S & F, Independents or greens hold so much power based on a very narrow policy platform.

No doubt some wage earners will not give the S & F the time of day next time around.

    Cheers
