    Casting big baits Of Beach

    Hi all,

Trying to start doing a little beach jewfish fishing. I've got the spot sorted, and technique i think. I have heard of a random that is now a good mate that jewfish are catch-able you just have to know how. This is what he said and my thoughts...

    - 2 5/0 octopus or 8/0(dont know spelling)?? hooks or circle hooks about 2 inches apart
    - 60lb tough trace
    - swivel 80lb or more
    - Big enough sinker to 'anker' the bait
    - Large squid or live mullet
-10-12kg surf rod shake spear, not out there to spend a fortune on a new type of fishing just yet and Okuma epix baitfeeder which would be similar size to the 20 000 stella
-25lb mono or 60lb braid - what would be better

Is there any local fisherman that fish of the beaches around the sunshine coast, going to try somewhere around Coolum and what sized sinker are you using. I would like a minimum for the good days, heavier and eventually about 3 different sizes to switch around depending on conditions. The main question is the rod mentioned will that be able to throw a 6-7" mullet or rather big squid out including a hefty sinker to where they will be waiting. Also any general information on where they will be at. What is the most productive season and any preferences regarding your technique, whether the leader is to heavy or so on. I would really appreciate a PM of someones secret spot, im not out there to rape the stocks, i would not even keep a fish - Promise. Im totally new to this and the technique mentioned would that be any good.

    Hello fishinwantahbee.
Go to the beach in daytime and have a look at the beach, and find a hole you want to fish.
There may be a rip going out , this will be good.
Just use whatever hooks you have, 5/0 or 8/0 .
dead squid or live mullet..... well, first catch your mullet, small for casting, I used to fish jew in the river with big mullet, so I didn't have to cast them... just feed them out.

Just see what you can cast, a small mullet , easier to use dead bait.........

With jew fishing there is a wait, then let them take the bait, and let line out . and then let them take it and they will run and then swallow the bait, and after a 20 or 30 mtr run, you need to set the hook. Then he goes for a big run....................
    And you have got him.
If you stomach hook a big fish you should eat it , as they may not survive a release.
Maybe just try lure fishing for jew.....

    There's heaps of jew about.
I was down at La Balsa Park last week, and little jew were following my lure in. The water was so clear, wished I had goggles and a snorkel, and flippers.....

Mean Name, Thanks for advice, it wouldn't be the end of the world if i kept 1. I have found the opposite with the numbers. The fish may be there but the size sure aren't. Ive heard that the smaller fish come into the systems around this time and than once they have done some growing majority of them go offshore or the lucky one gets to have a life in the river. So the fish from previous seasons have copped quiet a bit of a hammering and now it is such a struggle to get through the little ones. There are heaps of fish around the 60cm mark and they would be the most common catch of mine. Snorkeling sure is great fun, have done it recently at the Maroochy river mouth and seen a massive estuary cod, weird looking over sized butter bream?? big bream like 50cm, i want to do it again and keep more of a look out for Jewfish. Thanks again

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

Randell's advice is spot on. Go for a walk at high tide in daylight and find a close in gutter or hole with a bit of depth in it, then go back and fish it at night. Two spots where I've caught jew in your area are the north shore at the Maroochy river mouth and the southern end of the rocks at Point Arkwright. If you're going to fish specifically for jew then you will probably have to put in a fair number of hours, so take a chair to make it more comfortable. Good dead baits are mullet, whole squid and yellowtail pike. I use three ganged 5/0's and 50cm wire trace. I don't like using too much lead as I want the bait to move about a bit. If the sweep along the beach is too strong then try somewhere else or pick a calmer night. When the jew takes the bait you must let it run - if you strike on the first run you'll miss nine out of ten. On the second run you strike hard and the fish will take off on a very powerful run - let it go, just keep a bit of pressure on until it stops. After that it's pretty easy as they tire very quickly and usually come in belly up.

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

As an alternative, you can fish with beachworms almost at your feet, albeit at night.
You will need to find a spit ideally with a small channel up the middle of it, and a tiny gutter in front. Jew like an entry and exit. Select your possie and fish the 2 or 3 largest spring highs, or alternatively the largest neap highs, that occur at night. Thread a large beach worm, preferably a 'king' worm onto your hook and up your line, or make a bunch, whatever, just make a large study bait of it. Make sure your hook/s are VERY sharp.
No need to cast a mile, if you have the right water the fish will be within 20 metres max, probably even 10. Look for this spit adjacent to a rivermouth, or some rocks/headland.
If you cant get beachworms, use a large tailor or mullet fillet instead, I use a 10/0 through the thin end of the fillet, like you would a circle hook. I use a ball sinker for this, doesn't need to be real big, just enough to hold your bait in the zone. Aim for the area on the spit where there is the least water movement. This is where the fish will be.
Be prepared to catch large rays and if using fillets, sharks as by-catch! I use 50lb leader for worms and 100lb for fillets, greenback tailor will have a go if they are about.....
Beware, night fishing can be addictive!

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

i was taught how to beach/rock fish for jew by a native australian,he was very good.

We fished yamba breakwall 10 years ago,he would take no bait, just a spare smaller rod with a large jag hook,he would spot a school of large sea mullet, then jag 2 or 3 for the night,He fished with a 12ft fibreglass rod and a alvey reel.

He would fish with a very large ball sinker-swivel-1 metre of 40-50lb mono trace

forget the hook size but it was very big,roughly,100mm x 50mm,with the hook put through just under the dorsal, then it was a matter of waiting.
he caught the biggest jew in yamba that year at 30.4kg,as well as many other all between 10-30kg.

he always told me to never set the hook on the first run,but to feed it line and set the hook on the second run.never caught one myself, but often sat in awe as i watched him bring in another, sharks were a usual bycatch, and after that year,i decided i never wanted to swim in the surf again.

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

I fish flesh baits off the beach with a single 10/0 octopus and large sinker. Any medium/heavy surf rod will do as long as you have 300m or so of line or are prepared to run down the beach chasing it. I strike as soon as the fish moves off with it be it towards or away from me, most times no strike is even needed as the bigger fish smash it and take off hooking themselves. Takes a pretty big toll on your body mainly your back if you put in big sessions. Ben

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

Thankyou for all the great advice. I need urgent advice on whether the low tide is any good, Urgent because i would really like to have a crack at them tonight. The whether seems to be allright 1-1.3 meter swell and low tide around 6:35am. If i was to go would there be a chance of hooking a jewie. Probaly get there about 1 hour and a half before the change and stay a futhur 2 hours after that. We would fish mullet frozen from yesterday and buy some live worms from swan. With the swell and so on can anyone tell be a size of sinker number wise or compare it to somthing like a ping pong ball. Dad has to work tomorro so it cant be too late. I have scanned over google maps and found a mouth or some creek with what seems to be a reef out the back - out of casting range and a gutter to the right hand side of it. It is in coolum and the road which brings you out to it is stumers creek or something cant really read it. type in google Stumers Creek Road, Coolum Beach, Queensland actually can read it soz. Cheers again

One way to find out mate, go out and give it a go. Every spot fishes well at different tides. Some high, some low, some on the run, some on the slack.
Just remember google earth images aren't current and gutters that are visible now certainly won't be there now.
A good rule of thumb is start with a sinker about the size of your top thumb knuckle. if it's anchoring it heavily, then go down, if it's rolling sideways then up size.

Check out the above site. Look for Jew off the beach.
This to date is the only video of Jew being filmed caught live off the beach.
This will give you all the info you need and you will note it is in your area.
Then it is up to you to put the time in.
Bait must be live or fresh (caught that day).
    Have fun.

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

Thanks Guys just got 93cm jewfish out of the Maroochy River, it didn't fight very hard compared to others i have caught, still much better than Trevally, the big head shakes and run at the start! I have had 60cm fish take a a quicker run but definitely not as long. It was a slight tick tick tick set the hook and perfect hook up in the corner of the mount, the hinge. I was using jig heads which i came across in BCF. They are TT headhunter (green Pack) 3/0 extra large hook and 3/8. The fish seemed to tire quite quickly???? I guess it is luck of the draw, im sure ill get another one that will smoke me. After getting this fish im definitely going to downsize with 6lb power pro and 12lb vanish i was using 10lb fins and 14lb vanish which was still awesome. I'm still grinning since yesterday afternoon and is by far my best fishing experience.

Recently Ive been going great in the last two months the fish which ive caught,
83cm flathead, 93cm jew and some jew around the 60cm mark.

    Thanks Fishinwahbee

Re: Casting big baits Of Beach

Finally got out there for a fish. The conditions where quiet poor large swell which made the rocks which we wanted to fish of impossible. We went there and were not sure if we were doing the right thing. We went to the rocks at Yaroomba and the rocks didnt look fishable because of the conditions. We ended up going to the rocks at the bottom on Pt Perrie and it was ok but was not sure if i should keep my bait in or wind it in a check it. I did get a wobby Gon around 1 1/2 feet long. I was using squid from BCF as i do not no where to get fresh squid or how to, on a two hook rig with 1/0 musted hooks. Dad was using 2 5/0 musted hooks with a 20cm mullet on it. It comes Down to location could someone Please Please tell me there secret spot lol. Like google maps or very good description. Im open two PM's, as you would know from various threads i do not keep fish. I would rather fish beach then rocks. We got the high tide around 3:20 in the afternoon and did not see any results. I think it was the conditions because it was very hard to walk out into the surf and cast out into the gutter. We were not able to stick the rod in a rod holder as the line would keep getting pulled about because of the waves making it not very enjoyable. What would a cut off for swell/waves on the beach. I would appreciate any spot, just somewhere that is known to hold jew and a particular gutter or would any good gutter hold them?

Hey mate you'd be hard pressed getting anyones secret jew spot off them. Gutters and conditions dictate where to fish. A bit of swell is a good thing 1.5m+. Did you check out the link Da jew man put up, it's all in there ,GOLD. Ben
