    Bond Uni Weir

I've been going down to Bond Uni Weir the last couple of weeks with mixed results.
The general consensus among people I've spoken to down there are of the gates opening an hour after the top of the high tide and the bottom of the low tide at the GC Seaway for about 2 hours.
Last few times I've been there that hasn't been the case.
One of the guys fishing down there last week says that its all over the shop and no real pattern to opening times.
Does anyone have any better knowledge of this.
Any inside information would be great!!
Would calling the GCC Council be an idea?
    Cheers
    Look forward to your input.

Very strange at the moment but i believe it has to do with flood mitagation.
It looks as though the council is trying to keep the level of water down on the southern side as i've never seen it so low on that side.
The gates used to open approx 45min after high tide at the seaway but i believe now it seems to be about an hour and a half before high and seems to stay open for a long time on low tide so at times the tides are revesing as the gates are open.
Been a slow start to the year but there are a few around and even more guys trying to catch them at the moment.
Will be down there this afternoon having a flick for a few so if you see a white van say hello.

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

I have fished it for years and years... the gates open when they open... usually an hour before the tide, the bait is ridiculous there at the moment more herring than ya can poke a stick at!! when the gate opens into the lake late at night the trevors should be there waiting...its not a patch on what it used to be but in saying that there are some serious fish in the lake.. to get em though ya cant just do what everyone else does there... the biggest fish i have got there havent been when the gates have been open and definitely not standing on the gate

The gates were still opening at about an hour after high tide at the seaway like clockwork till a month ago when I noticed that the schedule is somewhat altered. Some of the locals said that the opening times of the gates are now dependable on the height of the tide instead. Like Nath said, herrings are abundant there at the moment and surely the predators are not far away. Still amazed me how the lake can hold such big fish and imo, majority of them feed within the lake irregardless the gates were open or not.

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

Gates are definately different to the last 4 years or so where they use to be very reliably opening 45mins to an hour after the tide at the seaway.
The gates have not opened for the last two days from what we can work out and they don't go off a float switch as ome people believe.(I've asked the council guys about this).
The best fishing always comes when the gates are open at night around the new and full moon with the full flow but at the moment it's not happening.
Let's hope the council return it to normal soon as i believe by reducing the water flow to the southern side the will afffect the oxygen levels in the ends of the lakes.

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

What they are in the process of doing today is leaving the gates open longer because of no rain and low tide levels they need to get more water in there.
So they will work out whats better, open an hour earlier or leave them open an hour longer, but yes its still 2 hr after high at the seaway.

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

So are they doing this for flood mitagation wayne?
You would think to get the highest level than if they oponed half hour before high(15/30mins after high at the seaway) and kept them open for an hour then you would get the peak of the tide when open and therefore the maximum height on the southern side.
If you find out any more wayne let us know mate.

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

No not so much flood mitagation more that with no rain and the low tides the level has dropped, even some of the ppl that live on the lake have been complaining about the level so, hence why the gate will be opened longer to get more water in.
Yes timing is everything, im sure the guys know exactly how long after high at the seaway it reaches its peak at the locks and they work out when the tide starts to slow is when they'll have the locks shut off, to contain as much water.
Old mate said they were going there today to do it manually, probable sit there and watch the flow and then do the calculations.

    cheers

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

Can anyone possibly let me know a good spot around bond uni, I had a look on google maps but there is a few different lakes, I don't want to waste my time fishing is a bad spot.

Also what works well in there? Plastics? Bait?

    Thanks in advance,

    Gav

    Re: Bond Uni Weir

Gav, since when is fishing ever a waste of time... lol the fish are in there everywhere it holds a lot of herring and it depends on what you are targetting as to what to do... pick a spot watch for bust ups (trevally) and throw lures or livebaits at them, when ppl talk about bond uni they are mainly talking about the loch or causeway thingy
like i say to most people asking about specifics, half the fun is getting out there and working it out for yourself mate. well i hope that helps a bit.

Well the gates were open the night before last but not last night..... specifically went there to have a fish last night but the night before was purely to get bait.. its was as quiet as it gets last night and a bit weird... so much bait there its not funny but as for the predators, i did not see one single swirl or bust up in an hour and a half..so tues night they were open when i got there at 8.20 and last night they were still shut at 10.20 when i left.... really annoying as i should have just got the bait and left (like i usually do)
