Thanks Nathan, not to mean it's a waste of time but you got my point, a good spot to start is what I meant.
Cheers for the reply

dont knock on deaths door... ring the doorbell and run... death hates that!!
Went and had a fish there this arvo for around an hour and a half, just flicking a few different lures around. Tried a couple of 3" sqidgies, a small halco hard body lure and a blue and white slug about 50mm long with no sucess.
I wasn't on the gates themselves, because there was already a few people there, the young fellow pulling up HEAPS of herring! one guy opposite me on the bank had one but lost it just at the bank.
Only saw one big bust up about 3' in front of me, and had a decent sized something (possibly trevally) follow my slug right to the bank then dart back the other way.
Definitely have to work out the tides and try again, it sucks because I live at cleveland so it's a bit of a drive. Hopefully I'll have more luck next time, I'll try and jig for some herring and use them live.
Gav,
Yes a bit of a way to drive for an hour and a half of fishing..anyway i guess you just have to put in the time, try different spots, present baits in different ways, try different methods with the lures, sometimes you can be lucky and be in the right place at the right time but you know thats not always the case......................... perseverance.
