    removing ink from live squid

I've caught a number of squid in Moreton Bay lately but don't know how to get them to eject all their ink before I clean them for cooking. I've been told various techniques which all work to some degree. Those squid just seem to hold on to enough to frustrate me at the end. Anyone know of a successful way to get the ink out?

If you don't want you and your boat covered in black polka dots as you lift them, hold them in the water for a few seconds and let them 'ink' underwater. Then lift them up and drop them into a bucket or bin of water with a lid. Unhook them under water and allow them to die in the bucket - this only takes a couple of minutes usually. Place them on ice as soon as you can. If you don't want your cooler full of black water place them in a plastic bag before icing them. When you clean them take care not to rupture the ink sac, which will always contain more ink no matter what you do

Agree with Freeeeeeeeeeeeeedom, but make sure you have a lid for your bucket. Trust me on this one.

If you're fishing with a mate just point the squid at him when you first pull it out of the water. Works a treat.

Other than that its just a matter of playing with the squid on the line until it releases the ink. If its only hooked by the long tenticles then you have to be careful not to lose it as I guess you've discovered. Once netted you can still give the squid a hard time in the water to get it to release more ink.
