    Question Huge Barra

There was a photo in today's Gladstone Observer of a 135cm Barra weighing 41kg said to be have been caught at Kinchant Dam west of Mackay. Anyone know if this is true or a photoshop production? Tried to find a link at the Observer site but no luck.

True its getting stuffed and mounted now, caught on 20lb braid, the fight was long and the fish would not have survived ,the guy could hardly pick the thing up, ive seen 2 pics of it.

    is this the same fish?

This photo was sent to me by a mate in Mackay. He caught this monster Barra in one of the dams up there and it took him 3 ½ hours to land it. Don’t know what it weighed or what length it was, but I am sure you all agree it is probably the biggest barra you have ever seen?

    Re: Huge Barra

I had heard a couple of different "rumours" of fish this size caught on the same weekend. I received the same pic posted by GABBA on my phone recently from a mate who lives in Mirani (10km from Kinchant Dam). He has no idea who this guy is & I have no proof this hasn't been photoshopped, but, given that barra have the potential to grow up to 200cm in length, I'm not surprised fish like this are turning up in Qld impoundments.
The other rumour was of a fish of similar size angled from a kayak. I heard rumours a few years back of 1400mm fish caught in the same dam, again, no proof but not totally surprised...
I havnt fished Kinchant much lately but last time I went for a night fish (about 2 weeks before this monster), we had a few short strikes on surface lures that were enormous implosions that made extremely large displacements of water that left me & my mate bewildered & frustrated that these fish didnt find the pointy bits of the lure. I'm not saying these fish were as big as the monster caught a month ago, but I guess to be easily well in excess of the metre mark.

    Re: Huge Barra

looks like there is something going on there with the lens or perspective that makes the fish look bigger than it actually is. Not saying this is intentional, but look how much room he appears to have on his boat. I've seen less room in an 8 metre game boat. it looks like he could put a couple of banana chairs and a card table in the back of that tinny and still have room for a couple of eskies!

who knows though, might just be a giant barra!

    Re: Huge Barra

It's real, it was sitting in the freezer at Nashy's Compleat Angler awaiting taxidermy treatment. There is another photo of him holding the fish and it's a beast of a thing. Also boys that regularly fish Kinchant aren't that surprised as there would more than likely be bigger girls than that in there.

    Cheers

    Chris
