    Ifish 8 mm ring spanner

Did anyone catch the episode today where Paul was at Arno Bay catching 95cm snapper with a 8mm ring spanner set up like a jig. Goes to show that thinking outside the box works sometimes.

Saw that, thought I was going mad. is that all he had? No bait on the hook? just jigging with the ring spanner? unbelievable. Arno Bay is where I want to go for a trip one year. Thems some big snapps down there

I reckon all that shows is people pay way too much attention to the glossy paint and packaging on "store bought" lures and stuff, if I think of it, I will take a photo of a jig I used to make back in about 1980ish for jigging kingfish, and guess what, it had the hook on a length of dacron, tied to the top split ring, so it dangled down, just like the "new" jigs of today, however, we only used that system in one location (because of snags) all other jigs were a more traditional treble on the bottom. Stand by for a photo tomorrow (I hope) couldn't get any simpler, just a length of stainless flat bar, 6' long and 1' wide, a hole in each end! no paint at all, very similar to a ring spanner?

Yeah mike he didn't have any bait, just the hooks joined to the rings . I suppose anything shiny would have done the trick as it was such a hot bite. Good old Malcom Douglas would be proud as he used to catch trevs and such using anything he could find in the bottom of the boat.

And Noel i reckon it would be similar to the ring spanner, look forward to your pics.

I remember as a young kid on the rocks at Culburra, watching men using lures made from spoons. They cut the handle off, drilled a hole at each end put kook through one hole and line the other side, used to catch tailor trevalley etc. Cheap as.

On a similar note there was a fishing show on the ###### channel - Hook Line and Sinker - where they had a challenge using home made lures and caught a large tuna using a trolled lure made from a lead battery terminal and some hair he snipped from his dog (a collie I think). I think they caught trout also on a lure made from a spoon. There is a little bit of it on this video about 45 seconds in:

When I went to Lucinda some years ago i went to all the op shops in hervey bay and brought every butter knife i could find, cut the knife end off, hole in each end of the handle part and a bit of reflective tape. We lost more fish than we caught and went through over 100 while we were there around the jetty!
