Thread: Single or double footed guides??

    Single or double footed guides??

I am building a Phenix 7 foot 15 - 30lb (USA rating) mod-fast action rod. It will mainly be used for shallow offshore work e.g. approx 30 metres depth.

I normally fish in 80+ metres and have always used double footed guides on heavier rods.

I will be using 30lb line and max drag about 4kg's (mostly lighter)

I would like to use single foot guides, would this be ok or would it be better to use double footed guides for offshore use???

    Regards Adam

Re: Single or double footed guides??

I could be wrong, but I would say that single foot guides should be able to handle 4kg of drag (assuming it's being setup as a spinning rod). However, if that's the maximum you're going to be pushing, is there a need for 30lb braid or a 30lb rod? Realistically, at some points you're probably going to want to push it a lot further than 4kg, and if so, I'm not too sure how much more single foots can handle. Although in saying that, they are relatively easy to replace if they do end up a bit warped.

Re: Single or double footed guides??

I have built a couple of 15 -30lb spin sticks with single foot guides with out any probs especially the Fuiji K series
Some with single foot stripper and some with a double foot striper...and if i do another one will use the double foot as the stripper and the rest single foot
I get some cracking around the foot of the single foot stripper guide ..but i think its more from the actual guide getting smashed into things.rather than a flexing or under load thing
The big single foot seems to catch and smash into thing if ya not on ya toes

Also have just got myself a Phenix 15 -40 lb blank (the next one up from yours). But will be a spiral wrap for Spanish Macs

Thanks lymphocyte, I think you answered my question using the 4kg drag scenario on guides. The rating of the rod at 15-30lb is a USA rating and probably not what we would consider a 15kg rod here in Australia.

Thats Willo, I like the idea of double footed guides for striper and then move into single foot guides up the rod.

Yes, it will be a spinning rod.

Singles are pretty good these days but they will never be as strong or durable as double foot guides.
