    Dragon Scale Questions

I have really been enjoying the looks of the dragon scale wrapping that has been popping up on this board, and I want to give it a go on my next rod. I have 2 questions regarding the dragon scale wrap:
    1. Does the effect only work with metallic thread, or can you get a good result with NCP?
    2. How do you finish the "underwrap" of mono? I still can't figure out how the get the good transition from dragon scale wrap to standard wrap at each end.

    Thanks again,
    ben

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it won't work at all with NCP but the effect will be poor at best when compared to a metallic

The best ones I've seen use either C or D thread for the pattern, or else as I did & use gyproc tape (I'm an expert having done exactly one) but a couple of guys I know do them almost daily this way.
You just cut a 20mm wide piece and wrap it on in a spiral like you would a cork or leather grip
Then wrap over with A metallic
Using this stuff or thread means you can feather and compress the ends, so the finish wraps aren't too hard
Mono doesn't compress so it'll be much harder to finish
You could taper it by pressing something hot on it I suppose like a soldering iron
I also saw that one of the guys that does a lot of these does the over wrap in both directions if he's getting gaps with little or no loss of effect
I've been frigging around packing and using CP to hold it all in place, so I might try that next time

    Re: Dragon Scale Questions

Can I add a few questions? I'm in the middle of having a go myself based on a photo on this board by Willo. So yes I have no idea other than that!! It's looking okay but I think I should have done 16 wraps of mono instead of 8. The rod diameter is maybe 15 mm and the scales look a bit big. I also used 25 lb Platypus Platinum which may be a little thick at 0.4 mm.

I have no idea how to finish the underwrap. I have just started the overwrap away from the mess I have at the end and and was planning on cutting it all off and adding more overbinding. This isn't going to work is it?

Is there anything online with some instructions?

    Daintree Boy,

I had the same thoughts as you get it started then worry about the mess at the end later. My current though is to start the over wrap as close to the and as I can. Epoxy it, and try to get it leveled up higher than the underbind, then do another "smooth" bind over the end of the mono to hide it.

Going to give it a go when I get home and see what it is like...
