am ready to glue 2 sheets of ply together for my transom and then bond it to the hull.
I have been doing all my work so far with polyester resin ( mainly price )
but now i just want to see if probond will do the job well enough or if i should use epoxy but then i know need to do everything else with epoxy ( expensive ).
so if anyone has any experience with both would be great to hear.
Try calling Jeff at Volksglas, Springwood 3208 4850, he suggested I do my transom in ply with an epoxy resin (can't remember the name of it, it may have been probond).
But he has had heaps of customers use it for this purpose, with no problems,
Used probond a lot lately but not for transom. Great stuff for filling/shaping/finishing and assorted glueing but cant see it ever being quite as strong as an epoxy. I imagine it shits on crap epoxies tho. At the same time i cant imagine why it wouldnt be fine for transom coz its more waterproof than poly resins which means its got to be getting up near epoxy in that regard, but its HEAVY. Last time i was in an fgi i noticed they had a few lighter grades of probond, might be worth asking. Got fancy shit in it like kevlar and follow normal catalyst/drying times tho it seems to go unworkable faster than normal resin with same temps/mekp. Need to work reasonably fast and is v handy stuff especially if planning to flowcoat the area/ply or glassing over soon after with poly. Sand all surface coarse first plus acetone clean, and always get rid of all old flowcoat plus grime of course. Can also use it to fill end grain/sawn edges of ply but dont overdo coz it can be a bastard to sand like anything else thats tuff.
The stuff seems so tough u get the feeling if you could somehow lay up f/glass using it instead of resin it'd be amazingly tough and w/proof. Can thin it apparently but not recommended re strength.
Yes epoxy is the norm, and i;d probably stick with that...but i cant imagine any reason why probond then glassed over well wouldnt at least achieve the same. Afterall good fibreglassing with poly is more w/proof than lousy glassing with epoxy (well so i've been told).
I've had good experiences with probond but be handy if a pro or more experienced guy could offer u something more re the transom itself.
The truly serious stuff they carry is plexus..a fast drying epoxy that i reckon would build the queen mary and doesnt matter as much about whther poly/epoxy base coz it sticks everything (including one of the few things that will glue urethane such as a keelguard). Made by Nth american composites i think and not cheap and in a crappy tube arrangement and they market it in diff't drying times ..MA300 i think is 5 minutes workable (300 seconds) etc. Great as a replacement for some s/s fastening when u dont/cant screw/bolt oir awkward..but dont expect to ever get it off again..for permanent stuff. Normal quality epoxy resin with it glassed should be just fine tho...whynot just ask them best/cost effective way to go, guys at my local are great blokes happy to help.
Sorry cant be more help with the transom ply tho..just havent seen it used for that yet. Might be commonly used i dont know, certainly seems like it could be a good alternative to epoxy for the job if done properly and not wanting to use epoxy at all.
