    Dolphinfish - help needed

    Hi
I am looking to target Dollies in the next few weeks, I have had good success during the week off the waverider off Straddie but its a no-go at wkds...

I hear that people pick them up when trolling for Marlin...

Would appreciate some pointers - I know to find flotsam or stuff floating but am keen to understand how I would troll for them and in what sort of country....

As always not looking for hand-hold just some pointers to get me out of the blocks...

    Cheers

tow Rapala Xraps and skirts in water 70-100m they are ocean dwelling. I have always caught them on the troll. if you see any floating debris troll around that as they like shadow offshore and will hang under floating bits and pieces. Try dragging lures along fresh meets dirty water lines. Waverider is open all hrs !!!! But not always there, take livies if your going to fish it

    What he said.lol
We get them trolling for small blacks in about 50mtrs.
But the bigger ones we get out wide trolling for blue marlin in depths from 250-2000mtrs.
But there isnt certain reefs that hold them due to there movments with the current.
    Cheers MICK.
Get out there and troll, there normally the first of the palegics to turn up prior to the black marlin.
We were getting them out the front of the seaway and pinbar for years.

Not familiar with the Qld offshore scene ........ but trolling fish trap floats works down NSW. We used to use jet head type trolling lures. The larger fish will usually be away from the structure (float , flotsam etc)
The best fun was casting unweighted pilchard pieces at where they were holding ...... awesome.
Another trick was when you found fish - we used to lay out some sheets of black plastic on the water & the fish would often move toward & under it (plastic floats)....... this saved having to deal with ropes or waverider chains.

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

Best option would be to find marks for a FAD; we caught plenty of fish off Fads, but not sure if you’re allowed to make them here in QLD.

We got a small one off 1770 a couple of years ago that was hanging around the boat with his mate on an unwaited pilly.

Same speed as you do for marlin,6-7kts.
The higher speeds are for wahoo. The dolphin fish are by catch when trolling for marlin just as the wahoo are. There are guys out there who do target wahoo with high speed lures.

    justinsmith,

6 to 7 knots seem about right, I've caught them on live yakkas and slimies without lead, just float them out near wave rider buoy as yopu drift past depending on the current, Sometimes had to burly them up. I've used skirted lure in the past and it was a good size dolphinfish (Mahi Mahi)

I have caught a fair few on hardbody minnows but recently I have been doing better on smallish resin heads pushers. I normally work a spread of minnows and a resin head out behind them. The YFT and Dollies seem to go for this rather than the minnows. I work them at about 8knts

I have got a few out towards the Gutters and Warregos. They like clean water so if its starting to go blue you are in with a chance.

If you find a good patch of them, turn the motor off, you'll be able to burley them to the boat, throw in a baited hook and hold on
