Wathumba Creek to Roonies Point access or tips

Anyone got any tips or advice for getting my tinny to Wathumba then heading up to Roonies Point? Thinking of heading up for the weekend but haven't been before so I'm not sure whether to head over from Inskip or Urangan. Has anybody fished the area lately, is there much biting up that way?

What sized tinny have you got mate? And you mean drive up the beach to Wathumba to put your tinny in then head up to Roonies? How long do you plan on staying up there? I would be careful launching in Wathumba if you are not familiar with the area.

My tinny is 4.3m and I was thinking of coming up from Hook Point along the eastern side up to Orchid beach then heading across and I'm only going to spend saturday night up there. I'm mainly going for a look before coming up for a longer trip.

Mate, like GM said, can be a tough time launching in that area. Having said that, it is doable, many people do it, and the fishing can be great along the stretch between wathumba and rooney's. I like the area a lot for fishing. Always keep an eye out in the shallows, as you can ctach any number of sppedsters cruising in 'em, even sailfish, which should be coming on in the next few weeks or so. Also work the drops trolling for any number of macks/trevs/tuna. Have even caught a wahoo on the drop directly out from the point. Really deep water (around 30m) just before the bend. You can also clean up on your bread and butter flatties, bream, whiting. Enjoy the area, mate, she's a great stretch. I've never actually launched a boat from there exactly, other than an inflatable zodie from the beach, so hopefully someone with that experience can chime in.

    Hi Mate,

Your best bet is coming up from Hook Point to Orchid Beach then across to Wathumba, allow a good hour to get from Orchid to Wathumba, it isn't the best track for towing a boat but not too bad. You can only really safely launch an hour either side of low or right on high tide so keep that in mind, at low you can drive out and drop it right in the creek, or high tide you can drop it in near the top of the track, it is a bit tricky though cause of the soft sand and bugger all turning room. Be very careful where you drive if you are on your own, never drive anywhere that there are no tyre tracks. Getting out the creek is easy, just go slow if it is low tide. Keep an eye on the weather too, it can be really nasty in a small tinny in platypus bay when the wind gets up. It is a good 25kms up to Roonies from the creek. If you are just heading up there for a look then you are best off trolling some lures along the drop off or as cuzzamundi said, keep an eye out in the shallows, if you see any giant rays there are normally big queenies following them around. About half way up is Blowah Rocks, which is coffee rock and awesome fishing! There are some giant flathead around there and big trevs! It is a beautiful stretch of coastline, but keep in mind it is a very remote and wild location, if you come unstuck help is a fair way off.

If you want any more info mate just let me know or PM me.

    Cheers

Thanks for your help GM. We didn't have any luck with the weather but we did make it up to Roonies and had a scout round for about 10k's out. It was a bit rushed as we put in at Wathumba at 11:00 am on Saturday and pulled the boat out at 11:00 am on Sunday. We managed to do about 80k's all up and got all the way up to Roonies but I couldn't find any fish out in the deeper water or any decent structure for that matter. We did get a few flatties in Wathumba and one decent one out off the rocks up further. I'll definitely be back for a longer trip as soon as i get some spare time.

Hey Mate, No worries! Too bad the weather didn't play the game but it would have still been a fun trip! At least you got a few lizards! Hopefully next time you get a few more days to explore the place! Im up there for 3 weeks over Xmas and NYE so i will hopefully spend a bit of time in that area!
