Smile material planning for my first set of rods, Miss anything????

Hi guys, well, im about to plunge into the deep after practicing away with my wrapping etc with some old rods.

I have bought 4 snyder blanks 2x MT6144 and 2x MT4144 and im looking to purchase some materials to kit these out. This is my shopping list at the moment. 2 rods will be low mounts (alvey) and 2 will be spinning mounts.

    2 x Fuji BSVLG
1x40,1x30,1x20,1x16,1x12,1x10,2x8 +tip (size 40 is the low mount)

    2 x Fuji BSVLG
1x30,1x20,1x16,1x12,1x10,2x8 and a tip (spinning outfit)

3 x fuji DPSD - 30 reel seats (ID is 30mm) takes care of 2 spin rods and a 4 wrap low mount

1 x fuji DPSD - 32 reel seat (ID is 32mm) needed for the 6 wrap low mount as rod diameter is 30.5mm at 15cm from the bottom of the blank (i cant find this anywhere in stock can anyone help?!)

Madeira 30 Spool box polyneon at 1100yd of thread on each spool

Flexcoat Rod Finish 32oz kit (am i getting too much epoxy here? remember, im doing 4 surf rods and there will be decorative butt wraps on all 4 rods, approx 25cm long each + 7 guides per rod)

U-40 Color Lock 4oz (again, is this too much or not enough?)

3 x Alps Eva Straight Grip S14 28mm ID (Rear grips, 1 grip will be sliced into two for low mount for alveys)

4 x Alps Eva Straight Grip S14 25mm ID (lowering id to take into account for taper)

2 x Alvey Open End Runners

    4 x Rubber Butt Caps 32mm

I think i covered all the bases.......... (i have brushes, specimen jars, spatulas etc for applying finish)

Can anyone make any recommendations or did i miss something? Im keen to hear as i will be hopefully making some orders soon!

PS: Dont add any dollar figures here, the wife might see this post and then im in trouble! (joking)

    Hey mate,

If it doesn't cost you much more in postage, I would maybe recommend buying the components for only one of the rods (or at least one for each of the two blank types). You learn a lot when your piecing together a rod, particularly during your early builds. So it might save you a few dollars if you build one, assess whether you want to make any modifications, and then buy components for the second rod accordingly. Just a thought.

The amount of finish that you are purchasing is excessive.I\ve built about 8 rods and now have at least 16 oz of thread remaining.I don't skim on the number of coats so that I even out the fancy butt wraps that I do.
Be also aware that Flexcoat comes in both low build and high build so that you will have to decide which one you want to use.
The amount of finish in 32oz is fine if you are going to do a number of rods after this initial build but .
a smaller amount(perhaps 8oz)is sufficient.IF you are purchasing from US Bullard International sell a 16oz
    finish.

Dich the size 8 guides mate. Just put 3 x 10s on because a size 8 guide is to small on a surf rod especially on those blanks. And 32oz is way more than you need to do 4 surf rods. Half that would be bordering on to much but at least you will have enough even with 15 or 16oz bottles. Do yourself a favor and avoid the high build crap, stick with the light version of the same brand. You will need to put more coats on but then it will look 10 times better IMHO. Just remember to put thin coats on each time because that way you keep the bubbles out and you will slowly build up the coating each time. If you use a high build and dump it all on in one go then it will look like sh!t. Why people use high build for is beyond me, I mean they go to all the trouble of building and binding and then coat it all on one go and then they wonder wehy it looks crap.

I have a big arse surf reel seat out in the shed as a result of a typo.
Yours if you want to pick it up.

I'd skip the madeira unless you're planning on decorative wraps.
#40 is smaller than A thread.
Not to say you can't wrap guides with it, but I wouldn't on that class rod(s)
Get some A & C size thread instead.
Even if madeira is strong enough, it'll give you the shits on bigger blanks.
    Cheers,
    Owen

thank you for the offer Owen but i cant pick it up, im in Sydney

Im happy to pay postage + a bit if your willing to send

I was planning on doing decorative warps on all of the rods, but i have been reading about the inherent problem of very fine thread on large blanks for guides.

Are there any cost effective alternatives?

    Guide choices..........

    Just a quick question guys!

i have been considering the guides i will be using and the more i read, the more i think i should be going for the fuji BHVLG high frame guides. How would they match up with BSVLG guides? (for example, what combination of guides would ensure a smooth transition from the BHVLG size 40HH stripper guide to BSVLG size 10 or so guide. Is it a matter of going with BHVLG guides up until size 16 then transferring over to a size 12 BSVLG or can the transition happen earlier?)

again, this is for the surf rods, im looking at around 7-8 guides in total.

Re: material planning for my first set of rods, Miss anything????

I use the BHVLG 40HH then I drop down to the standard BSVLG in a 25 then 16 then 12 and 10s. You dont or at least shouldnt use them HH frames all the way through toward the tip. The first guide being a stripper only needs to control the line from the reel then after that the line takes a straight line through to the tip. I have doen so much experimenting with guide configerations on surf rods its not funny. The best I could find given the diffrent surf rods actions was the 40HH and drop straight down to a BSVLG 25 and so on. If you keep the guide large after the striper then you loose distance.

thanks Stu for your information, i respect the fact that you had to go through a whole bunch of testing to get that data and then your willing to share it with the rest of us! 40HH THEN DROP TO 25 IT IS!
