Thread: a litre per mile

    Re: a litre per mile

    Fishard,

I have a Seafarer 6.2 Vagabond with twin 115 Ficht Evinrudes. My current fuel economy is around 1.8ltr/Nm at 26knots offshore, obviously better in the harbour.
I have thought about repowering and if I did, I would be looking at a single Suzuki/Yamaha 225 4stroke on the back. The hull is rated to 230HP and I wouldn't go any less.

Thanks guys. My Venom has 2 x 115 Evinrude 2 strokes and yep, it flies! Top end is about 46kts. To be honest, I'd be happy with 36kts. I understand you lose 10-20pc of efficiency in a twin rig setup, so figure a single 200 should produce similar results. If I lift one motor, it happily runs at 4200 rpm for about 20kts. My budget is super tight and it would be great to save a few grand by only running a 150. Realistically, I'm a 6 times a year boater, if the smaller motor would do the job, it would be nice

We run a Suzuki DF175 on a Caribbean Reef Runner with a Glass Screen and fiberglass hardtop, and head out to the shlef frequently. WOT is 37.5 knots @ 6000rpm, cruising at 20 to 25 knots consistently returns 0.5 litres per km or .9 litre per nautical mile. 6.3m 1020kg hull, 225kg of engine, 200 litres of fuel, 4 adults, 40 litres fresh water, esky, 30litre bait tank and gear. Hull is rated to 200HP, and 294KG. From what I recall when we were looking around the Reef Runner is similar to your boat. All figures above sourced from NMEA2000 data via a Garmin 750S.

I'm very happy with the fuel usage, 60k's out and 5 hours trolling and 60k's back for 95 litres of fuel.

Chose not to go to 200HP as the extra 25 HP had an additional weight cost of 45 Kg, couldn't justify the extra money for the minimal increase in power to weight.

    Cheers

Fishard, I have a victory that i repowered went from 175 ficht to a 150 etec, only time would be be nice for more oomph would be when fully loaded, if i repower again would go back up to 175 or 200? That said with 2 or 3 people no dive gear ice etc the 150 has plenty, top speed of 38knots and plenty of pick up

My 175 Opti uses on average 1.6-1.7 per km in rough conditions and about 1.0-1.2 at cruise speed of about 3000rpm.
