Main Line - Sporting Vs Landing

My problem is I am trying to work out what would be the best main line (braid) for my 2500 size diawa reel and my 2-4kg pfluger set up.

Currently I have 3 bream combo's which I have used in the river and had good success on the more spooky fish. I have started heading out to mud more often as new boat allows on a good to med weather (I.e 10-15 knot winds max - comfort levels) My set ups 1) 6lb fireline, 2) 6lb berkely tourny braid 3) 5.5lb.

I want to upgrade the main line on my Diawa to something around the 9-12lb range. I fish with a 12-20lb leader when off mud as I have been bricked many a time. I know recently I have managed to hook up on a few bigger models that seem to just snap me at my main line (not at knott or leader). I know sometimes I have cranked up the drag when I should of just chilled out but just looking to gauge what other fisho's of mud and surrounding islands use as a main line rating.

Any suggestions as what would be a good guide to run on my Diawa (specs - Spool Capacity - 6lb/180m, 8lb/170m) Cheers in advance.

p.s I know I got abit excited in cranking up the drag so I am working on that part of it.

I use 8lb microfuse or 10lb Fireline on that sized reel when chasing the Snapper in close and a 10-16lb leader depending on water clarity

I got two spools one for the 2500 FB and the Luvias comes with a spare spool, The FB has 6lb stren and 10lb PE, pretty much the PE feels light.

The Luvias has 6lb stren and 8 lb Power Pro (what the hell I gave the cheapo brand a go and had no issues).

They are both spooled relatively light but could easily throw some 18lb PE (even 20lb PE) on one.

Fishing from a boat I suggest you use 10-12lb braid for your heavy plastics setup for Mud, From a yak I would suggest 8lb braid. Yaks turn to the fish and follow quickly reducing the pressure on the line, boats do not. I know I have to use 12lb from my tinny for the same fish I use 8lb for from the yak.

Cheers for the comments guys, I think I might step to a 10lb for my mud setup it is to throw the med plastics around as I have a larger spin bay/snapper ian miller with a symetre 4000 16lb main.

I have been using 6 lb fireline and 12 lb leader for 5 yrs in the bay and 20 lb offshore with 30 lb leader on a 2500certate and never had any probs don't give up on the lighter line for the bay snaps as you will get more IMO ... Matt

Check on paulus website as he has checked breaking strain on lots of braid and a lot break far above there rated breaking strain , it might give you some ideas on what to spool up with

Hi Mossy, I've been using 4, 6lb fire line and just recently 12lb Platypus Pre-Test Braid. The Pre-Test Braid is very fine compared to its equivalent in Fireline. Haven't caught any big snaps tho either. The last one i saw caught was my Father in-laws fish a few months ago taken on 30lb braid. I was fishing stealthy and he had a big chunky rig out and bagged the fish of the day :/

Agreed. Lately I've been hitting the bay (Harry's, typically) with two set ups on hand. One rigged with 10lb braid and 10lb FC leader, the other with 15lb braid and 20lb FC leader. For what it's worth, the rods and reels are quite similar in size and ratings. Even rigging with the exact same jig heads and plastics, and alternating rods (one is dead sticked while the other is worked, then swapped), ALL my good fish of late have been caught on the 10lb outfit. I can't even think of a decent strike on the 20lb leader.
Sure, I loose some on the 10lb, but last trip I scored a 91cm Jewie, and a trip or two before that a 74cm Snapper. For me, I've just got to be patient after the hook up. Although, with the Jewie, my heart was in my mouth the entire time!

Thanks for the thoughts guys, I have decided to upgrade the 2500 diawa with 11lb exceed fireline.... I like this braid as I also have it in 6lb on my river rod. So will be fishing off mud with my pfluger trion 2-4 kg with 11lb main and a 10-15lb FC leader. Will be heading out soon to try the new config and see how it holds up.

I don't think you will have a problem Mossy, 2-4kg rods account for plenty of big snapps with very few losses. Much harder to pull a hook free on 11lb than 20lb braid too which means you stay connected lots longer. I am thinking of heading to Dum Island this weekend in the yak for a early run and a decent snapp.
