    Rainbow Beach

    G'day all,

Am heading to rainbow beach for a week soon and will have plenty of time for fishing.

Would love to hear from anyone that has fished there and can offer some spots worth checking out.

Only have a car so 4WD accessible spots will be sorely missed.

Am primarily set up with light gear for estuary fishing/spinning/SP's but have borrowed a beach rod off a mate so excited about that.

My fishing career is only in its 4th month and my bag has so far only consisted of whiting, bream, flathead, dart so something new would be a welcome change.

Given my limited experience dont be shy about "dumbing" it down. As well as spots I still need advice on best times, best tides, best baits and as new to the beach fishing some scope on gear to run would be helpful too.

Hope to hear back from a few of you

    Thanks in advance,

    Jason

Jason, it would be worth your while to have some metal lures to cast over rocks in gutters to the immediate south of the village. These rocks often produce tailor and trevally and occasionally school mackerel. The coffee rock reef area extends to about 1km south and is a case of finding rocks in water of reasonable depth - polarised sunnies can be useful. Lures between 30g and 65g depending on the poundage of your line, rod capabilities and the conditions you're fishing. Retrieval speeds don't need to be particularly fast at this time of year for tailor so an Alvey can do the job adequately. Bream, tarwhine and dart can be caught from around the same rocks on worm, eugarie or prawn.

    Re: Rainbow Beach

I just got back from 3 days at Inskip Point just north of Rainbow Beach.

On Saturday around dusk I had success catching a number of Tailor off the beach with just a small spin combo and using a popper lure. Had previously no luck with bait (prawns & worms) and had noticed a lot of bait fish being chased around, so swapped to the popper.

Also caught a seagull which couldn't resist the popper either, we managed to safely release it though.

No luck with bait, poppers, soft plastics on Sunday in the bright mid day sun, water was absolutely beautiful and clear though

If you head up to the "sarawak campground" at Inskip, take a left across the road from the bins and walk along the track through the bush. Plenty of muddies sit in amongst the mangroves. All you need is a torch and a scoop net!
