different epoxies for different purposes?
Hi guys,
im looking to grab some epoxy for setting EVA grips and for wraps/guides, im leaning towards the threadmaster or flex coat light for the wraps and guides but do i also use the same stuff to set my EVA grips? i was thinking of going to bunnings and getting some cheap 2 part for the grips (since no one will be looking under the grips for the beautiful finish )
what do you guys do in terms of the 2 chores (setting grips/reel seats and finishing wraps/guides)? keen to hear opinions as well as some recommendations!

Hi mullet ,use the flexi coat light for your wrapped guides or what ever brand rod epoxy you get and get some arildite or some 30 minite epoxy for your eva and reel seat, tape your eva in place so it dont creep or move and you will have time to clean things up ,i use probond epoxy for grips and reel seats its light soft butter when mixed and flexicoat light for my guides , hope this helps cheers Chris.

Re: different epoxies for different purposes?
I use FlexCoat on the guides and 24hr Araldite for the grips and winch mount. Tape the blank in 3 places minimum (5 is ideal) to the right diameter for the mount, heap on the araldite then get the seat into place. glue the front grip in place then stand for at least 24 hours vertically. Leaving the rod vertical for curing lets the glue run down to the tape and create full rings of glue to support the seat, laying them down to cure creates only one side with full glue contact.

thanks guys! will the araldite be ok for ramming eva grips down the blank too? (does it provide enough slip?)

Re: different epoxies for different purposes?
Roughen the blank where the grips will sit, being careful not go go past where the ends of the grip will lay, using a edge of a file or coarse emery paper, it doesn't matter how it looks, it if for good adhesion. lather the glue onto the blank (araldite is fine) get your grip and place a finger over the hole on one end and dribble a bit pf paint thinners into the other, seal that end off with a finger and shake it around to get it all wet inside. Pour the excess thinners back into the can and then slide the grip firmly into place. The thinners makes it slip easily and evaporates out through the grip leaving the glue to do its work.
I always stop 3mm from where it will end up and remove whatever glue is still there then slide it down to the end, just makes cleanup less messy with less glue around.
5 minute glue will work, but I use the 24hr as it never fails.
