Why Cant i Catch Jewies !!
Hi All,
Pretty frustrated ATM,I cant seem to catch any jewfish,My locals have had plenty in them the last few months and i have fluked a few and thats it.
Im a SP fisher, and generally target flathead, but at times have changed lures/weights to try and catch the jewies.
Whats going wrong,Any tips put there from people who know how to do it ?
I fish Pine River,Bribie island and Caboolture river.
i usually fish 6-8lb and 3/8 weight, with a 1-2 flick and 10-15 second pause,i often fish the deeper areas in the water column anywhere around 4-8 metres.

Adam, pay attention to your sounder and read the levels the fish are at. Jew will often sit somewhere well clear of the bottom, when they are at mid depth they will seldom drop to the bottom to pick up a plastic.
Sometimes you need to dramatically change your jigging technique to gain that strike as well.
Personally I would be fishing either 8lb braid or 15lb braid depending on the fish that area. A 10kg fish is a real handful on 6lb line and you will need lots of patience to get it to the boat. Jew are pretty clean fighters for the most part, and are quite easy to land if you get a good hookset.
The Pine really turned it on this winter for jew for those that succeeded in breaking the code. The Cab river though has been patchy. I haven't fished the passage for jew the past two years so I can't comment on there.
The big run of jew is well passed for this year, you might get a few residents still, but by and large the majority have moved offshore now with their seasonal runs

Re: Why Cant i Catch Jewies !!
Mate,
I know how you are feeling at the moment.
I am normally on top of the jewie game but this year has been a shocker in the Ballina area.
Theres been a few come into the river but the majority of jew are hanging out at the 32 and 42 fathom mark for some reason.
They have been getting jew on mullet in the river behind the cop shop but I dont feel like fighting with the crowd just to get my line in.
I find also that livebaiting for jew bores me to tears very quickly and I love using lures and soft plastics.
Jew will often travel in pairs or groups even with bigger fish so I usually get two if I get the first one(hard work at the moment).
The best rule I go by is go deep in summer and shallow in winter and read the water and current lines as jew are basically a lazy ambush hunter.
It would appear that jew are north of us and also a short distance south but not here and I am too lazy to drive south to Evans or illuka. The next shot will be christmas as they usually run then as well.
Cheers, steve
