Did the quick 36 hour run up to Port Stewart from Brisbane with 2 mates over the holidays . We had been planning the trip for a while and the weather was good to us for most of the week, with the usual trade winds proving a little challenging at times.
The road between Laura and Musgrave station was very rough as one guy who flew past us at 100kms found out when he flipped his camper trailer onto its roof, a miracle he didn't roll the car too. Anyway the first couple of days consisted of hitting close inshore reefs for plenty of trout, sweetlip, GT's and Mackeral. Then into the river for the Barra and jacks (unfortunately the biggest of the jacks were lost at the boat ). The PE tackle fly's did the job on the nanigai, trout and sweet lip on the reefs, threadybustyer 90s on the GT's and trout on drop offs. The barra and jack went to Threadbusters (particularly the older 60's with the fasinator at the back, which i believe are discontinued) and Richo extracta's a big thanks to Nick Stock for the advice on these they were awesome. All in all no monsters, about 200 bust offs , but good consistent fishing without more than 10 minutes between fish for the full week most fish were pan sized but no complaints here, the only vermin we caught all week was a 1200mm black tip reef shark. This was the first time we had gone to Port Stewart and found some really good gruond towards the end of the trip that contributed most the bust offs, so i can't wait to go again next year with a bit more local knowledge.
