North Stradbroke

Hello I was originally looking at heading to Moreton with my daughter but getting a barge home Monday late is not going to happen so considering heading over to North Stradbroke. I have never taken the 4wd over to Straddie so looking for some advice on the place. I wanted to camp along the eastern side hoping that it maybe bit quieter then the northern part of the island. I was looking at possibly camping around the blue lake area but wondering what the conditions are like with the causeway down to the beach (hard to tell just looking at a map). I have a petrol hilux so dont fancy drowning it, because if I camped down that way I wouldnt mind heading up to the gorge but if I have to head back along the fishermans road what is the yarraman lagoon crossing like? Another area to camp I am considering is the main beach closer towards the gorge. Last question in these two areas the camp sites are they exposed or offer some kind of protection, not worried about lack of facilities just dont want a miserable place to camp.

1)Ok first you need a beach permit you can buy on the Barge or from the Straddy Holiday Parks hut once you get off Barge.
2)You cant camp at Blue Lake
3)Straddy is better than Moreton
4)There are lots of camps on Main Beach but access is restricted on a high tide both by law and by water
5)Flinders Beach will be still good, chat to Holiday Parks about how busy it is.
6)Causeway on beach is not an issue infact it doesnt really exist
7)If you want to go to the Gorge its accessible by road and
8)Go to the Keyholes
9)Straddy is better than Moreton(repeated on purpose)

Thanks for the tips Marty, have been to Fraser and Moreton a few times and have not given straddy a go. Looks like it is better serviced by Ferries then Moreton is at the moment, keen to get my daughter camping while she is still interested one of the main things I had promised her was to go sand boarding and looks like Straddy has that on offer as well somewhere.

Moreton is better than straddie :-)
But Straddie is still good - we always camp down on Main beach. There's no issue with the causeway - never any water over the main road to the beach there.
Contact the straddie tourist office or maybe the barge company for info on vehicle and camping permits.

The camps down Main beach change in design (so to speak) the first few you will come accross are hidden behind the main dune and are protected. The further south you go there is a section where you can camp ontop of the dune and see the ocean from camp but it is exposes in the wind. During non holiday season Flinders is unreal and often there may be only 1-5 other campers, most of the time it is protected unledd you get a Northerly.
As mentioned in the past Straddy IS better than Moreton just like Holden is better than Ford and Cruiser better than Patrol

Yeah funny that my dogs vote for Staddie year after year too! Can't beat Flinders. Just take plenty of water bottles to fill up at Amity etc. Get in quick before you cant camp on the beach anymore. We have a reprieve for a while thanks to a lot of submissions but time will tell especially with dogs and beach driving. Cheers

Ended up camping on main beach about 10ks south from causeway, beautiful island but was surprised on how many track closures and restrictions they have on Straddy. Our camp spot was excellent, but the wind was not the best last weekend. I think we were actually protected a little last weekend as I think the worst was coming from the north at one stage and also mainly SWs. Looks like the Fishermans road is closed from one end and the other end was full of water along the way. My daughter started to freak out so had to turn back from the water crossings. I would go back and try staying around the northern part of the island and also do some fishing next time. Personally I still prefer Moreton or Fraser, what I like about the previous 2 is the lack of 2wd cars and far less restrictions on 4wding. Like I said though I would go back to Straddy as at least it is well serviced by the barges and fairly priced and nice and close , we are lucky to have such beautiful islands so close to home.
