Need advise on installing Teleflex steering system?

I am about to install a Teleflex QC steering system and I need some advice from ausfish members that have done it.

    1. What lubricant do I need when installing the steering cable through the tiller tube?

    2. I have seen from photos that there is some black tubing you can run the steering and control cables through along the gunwhale. What is this called and where do I get it from?

    3. I have measured the length of the steering cable to be 17f. Because I am ordering a steering kit I was wondering if it would make much difference to the steering if I went 18f just to be safe?

4.Installation looks to be a symple process but is there anything I should be extra carefull about?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Ask teleflex, but someone in here might know.
    2. "Loom tube" is probably what you;re asking about. Black usually, split tube that u feed lines/cables into, can get around the 50mm size at joints like whitworths/bias etc.
    3. Measuring it properly is probably the most important thing. You need to be accurate and there is a proper way of doing it that teleflex advises. Look for a youtube vids using teleflex installation type keywords and might get lucky or ring them. Not advisable to just estimate accurately or get the next size up if unsure.
    4. Just follow their installation and shouldnt strike troubles, esp if u measured right. See if u need to change the route of a new cable first, i.e. still have easy access all the way.
hope that helps...not a pro but have helped install a cpl.
Hopefully someone who has done it for a living will yell out to help. Just keeping your thread bumped near top on page 1 with some amateur hour stuff for best chance of pro help. Plus i;m bored shytless and its pissing down.

    Hi mate.

    1) make sure the steering tube is clean and free of corrosion. You can use a proper non hardening marine grease or a heavy oil or a Lino in based lube.

    2) "rigging tube". This stuff is very expensive for some obscure reason. You can also use the 50mm corrugated plastic tubing that you get in Bunnings in a 20mtr roll for about $20. The flanged fitting you can get from an LPG installer. I think Bunnings may have something similar also.

    3) cable length is very important to get accurate and quite easy to get it wrong. Fortunately when I've got it wrong I can return the kits to BLA and exchange for correct length. Obviously shorter is bad news but longer can be equally bad news if there's nowhere for the extra to go.

    4) Be careful with your radius's as too tight and the steering tightens up. Orientate the helm so the cable gets the smallest possible bend. Make sure before drilling to mount the helm that there are no obstructions behind.

    Cheers

I installed my teleflex no feedback helm and cable a few years ago. I cleaned out my tube using sandpaper on a drill bit. I used auto trans fluid only with the new style felt lubricator end cap. Mine has been great and I have no desire to go hydraulic. Cheers

Thanks BM for the idea of going to Bunnings. I have one on the way home form work so I will check it out.

I think I will wait and get a boat mechanic to install the steering system, so thanks everyone for your advice!
