Bay tackle

Gday all. Ill be getting my new boat in a couple of weeks and would like to start building up the tackle i am going to need for in the bay. mainly just looking at what size sinker range should i carry in ball and snapper leads.

Will just be around moreton bay, havent really done to much there before, with the occasional close outside trip. would be looking at snapper in winter and other reef species, mackeral, cobia in summer.

Matt, you are obviously fishing bait is that right? Anchoring? In which case I can't help you, I am hopeless with bait, but prefer soft plastics in the bay.

I have to agree with scalem, I've been fishing the bay, and I've been more successfull on soft plastics then on biat. I think you should use both. I just got a small freezer for bait, so will start stocking up on some mullets, pike and wotever I can get my hands on .

just get a small collection of leads. best thing is to keep the amount of lead to a minimum. baiting the beacons with pillies and live bait with only a small bean sinker so it basically gets down in the water column a bit but still 'floats' away will give you a good chance for a mack. Throwing slugs and slices around them is also a good option. Live bait can be caught around the beacons themselves and will give you a shot at the cobes.

my sinker collection consists of a handful of pea size weights which i normally dont use. fish 10 metres regularly with no weight. go too deep and you are in the land of rays and sharks. if i were fishing the deeper parts of the bay(very seldom) i use a downrigger.

biggest i carry is a size 3 ball for the bay and normally offshore i use either a 8 ounce or a 10 ounce snapper lead or if floatlining i use an ounce egg sinker .dayoo on here sells some nice egg one ounce which he will put glow powder on them if u ask nice...he also makes the dropper leads as well

I use a large variety from 00 to 10 balls or even 8oz snapper leads depending on targets, currents and location. I often have a livey down near the bottom on a 10 ball wile working the water column with plastics
