Wondering if the rain has pushed any of the hairtail out of mooloolah river?. Now that the boats done I plan on getting out again but want to avoid the hairtail where possible.
My wife caught a 1.65m one middle of the day in deep water going 3.15k.
That was at bottom end of Macleay. It fought very well. At the top end of Macleay at night they drove me mad. Just dropping a line over the side in 8' of water saw me hooking up to a few around 1.3m. They are ok to eat. My wife is Asian and cooks all fish whole. Says we waste to much by filleting. I filleted them the other day and it went well. Like big thick straps. Very pleasant to eat.
I was prawning up north tuesday and got 5 in my net in one throw. Try extracating the buggers when there teeth and gills are tangled around you good net. I must have caught 20. But I did getsome prawns thoughAttachment 71274
I fish fairly regular down the middle of the bay and have only just began to encounter hairtail on a regular basis. When i was a kid I used to read about the "dedicated' hairtail fisherman in NSW. I would still prefer a nice big bream or squire to a hairtail. Or a sweetlip or a flathead.... still fairly nice flesh.
Hit mooloolah this morning, Not one sign of hairtail FINALLY my plastics will stay intact haha , Plenty of good size bream wanting to play the game, Found a few trevs but dropped them mid fight
