Yes it costs a lot to buy a new outboard but when you look at the population of Australia an the population of the US the amount of turnover of outboards, fishing gear, cars or toilet paper ,etc allows for cheeper prices.I am afraid we have to buy expensive toilet paper to wipe our eyes.
Don't point the finger at dealers that assumption is way off the mark, you would be better venting your confusion at the manufacturers who are ripping there dealer network.
The margins in outboards is two tenths of bugger all and if it were not for the fitting and potential return service revenue it would hardly be worth there while. I am fortunate enough to know a couple of dealers reselling two different brands and there buy price and sell price after some haggling would shock you as to just how skinny there GP is on those items
As for items coming from US manufacturers well they are not silly they know our dollar is strong and think nothing of a price increase yet not apply the same increase in % terms to other o/seas markets.

Yeah but steeler it is not just GP as you know they get all the advertising, training , freebies, junkets, company finance kickbacks , volume discounts , racing programs , sponsorship , fitting, protected area to service , floorplan insurance demos etc etc. All motor trade businesses are the same . Oh woe is me I sell it just above cost price but the cost price is loaded. Not saying it is a goldmine but margin numbers don't describe the full picture.
Ahh yeah - the fitting or rigging charge. Ahh when they refuse or aren't allowed to sell box motors and claim no warranty as a excuse etc then you must add that margin in fitting to the profit they make on a motor sale as the client has no choice.
Some pretty crap dealers whe it comes to business out there who just don't work the monthly discounts and volume rebates to their own advantage- more fool them
manufacturers use various methods to ensure outboards are represented , teh dealer makes some $ and that the most money possible flows back to them in the most tax effecient way while keeping the brand alive.
Tunaticer-A European stern-drive maker used composite plastic for a series of drives and they were a disaster. Apart from being fitted to the wrong sort of boat (They were never intended to push 38' cruisers), the composites didn't diffuse heat like metal legs & caused lubrication & tolerance issues amongst other things.
Being bent over on most things we buy here in Australia is not uncommon. Don't be afraid to import things (outboards/fishing gear etc), just make sure that you do your research and know exactly what you want.
If the seller is reputable you should have no trouble. I have imported most of my fishing gear and two outboards (all new) without any troubles. I saved $10 000 on the outboards alone. Although I have no warranty here on the engines, for me it was worth the gamble. There is a lot of repairs in $10 000. If the difference was $3000-$5000 maybe it wouldn't be worth the gamble.
Cheers

You are talking a 10k plus purchase with potential to save 1000s- $700 is a small investment. If you dont have a lazy 700 in the pocket you are hardley going to be buying a new outboard are you? If it turns out to be a dodge business then that $700 is well spent as it just saved you 1000s.
I know if I was going to purchase a boat from the US with savings of 10s of thousands I would have no hesitation spending 2k to fly over and do the deal in person and test the product.
my thoughts exactly... some of the quotes im getting from malaysia, thailand and tiawan for a 90hp suzi are 4500-5200 delivered...
tell the missus suprise weekend away, drop her of at a day spa and go and check if its legit...
If it is legit, fantastic, save 50-60% on an outboard. If its not legit extra browny points with the missus for surprising her with a holiday
Problem I'd have with some of these countries is that counterfeit copies of just about everything is rife....even from what appear to be bona fide shops. How would you know you were getting a genuine item as some of the copies are very good. It would be too much of a risk for me buying from these countries and and prefer to stick to reputable USA/UK/European sources if spending that amount of cash......but each to their own.
i can appreciate the whole marinised engine thing but iam lead to beleive that the honda jazz car @16k driveaway shares the same engine as the honda bf90 outboard @14-15k...what the???
Outboard manufacturers please if you read this don't build outboards from magnesium. One of the least noble metals around, build them out of Platinum. Then watch the price skyrocket. But if cost is a factor use gold instead.Jim

$16900 driveaway for the car without the vtec motor.I guess you are paying for a complex marine engine with no wheels, doors, seats, differential, airbags, abs systems and so on.It would still not stop me buying a Honda though.
