Plans had to be changed to escape the 15/20kn south easters so i went down the local canal mouth Saturday night for the 1.28 am high tide. Got some good sized live mullets on the way and they were hooked and in the water by 11pm. The tide was running quite fast and it was hard to keep the baits where I wanted them. It was a very quiet night with absolutely nothing happening. I decided to pack up shop and head home about 2am. Whilst packing up my gear I heard my reel give out an almighty scream, I run over to it and set the hooks. It ran along the rock wall about 70m from where it was hooked before I started to gain any line. As I got it closer it surfaced... silver flash BIG JEW!. I cranked the drag and put some hurt on it and the hooks pulled and that was it too bad so sad. Unpacked the gear and stayed for another hour to no avail. Went home and drempt about landing it
unlucky mate. sounds like it would have made your night. i hate losing fish nice fish. The pain of it never goes away for me. better luck next time mate.
Would have been my first jewie. Legal too I recon. The hooks pulled when he surfaced. To make it worse he did a victory lap straight past the rock wall about a metre from where I was standing. Could of got him if I had a gaf or net...
Bad luck Brock, sounds like it was a good fish! But why did you 'crank the drag up and put some hurt on it' when it sounds like you had it under control and coming in.
I usually back off the drag at that stage of the fight, and ease them in. They pull the hooks much easier on a short leash.
lessons learnt the hard way are not easily forgotten.......
When I was a young fella there was an old guy who would come down to the mouth of the Newport canals (northside) and throw a bait over to the other corner towards D/Bay with his 12 foot can rods.. he used to sit and sit and sit and one day it payed off and he pulled up a nice jewie right in front of my eyes in the middle of the day... they are there it is just a matter of getting them to bite
