Serious contamination as hydrochloric acid spills into Brisbane River from ship
HYDROCHLORIC acid has been leaking into the mouth of the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay since before 8am.
A serious contamination leak has more than 23 fire fighters on site trying to control the incident.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the acid is leaking from a container ship and that it “looks like there is more than 30 litres leaking into the water per hour’’.
“It has been a protracted incident and we are planning to remove the container from the ship in the next hour,’’ she said.
It is understood the Department of Emergency Resource Management is on site.
Port of Brisbane authorities have been unable to be contacted at this stage.
