    Brisbane River ACID SPILL

Serious contamination as hydrochloric acid spills into Brisbane River from ship

HYDROCHLORIC acid has been leaking into the mouth of the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay since before 8am.

A serious contamination leak has more than 23 fire fighters on site trying to control the incident.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the acid is leaking from a container ship and that it “looks like there is more than 30 litres leaking into the water per hour’’.
“It has been a protracted incident and we are planning to remove the container from the ship in the next hour,’’ she said.
It is understood the Department of Emergency Resource Management is on site.
Port of Brisbane authorities have been unable to be contacted at this stage.

At least it is one of the lesser damaging chemicals that could enter the system. All animals and fish have Hydrochoric acid in their gut to digest their foods, us included. An awful lot of things die in our rivers every day so accumulatively that amounts to a lot of acid.

As long as they curb it before it reaches any concentration, it completely disassociates in water (Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrochloric_acid ).

    Still not a good look.
