Distributors don't make Jobs for Aussies anyway.....

It is manufacturing that is currently under fire and Gillard has just shunted an inquiry into that.

guess what, the governement get some of it back in taxes anyway , so does it really cost more ????

I agree about the future - markets- trades etc but not sure about the cost, labour, fuel.

$200 m is worth far more in Oz. Taxes, jobs, money passed on that will be respent in Oz.

To me this is more a "you buy my cows and I'll but your electronics"

Oz may trying to convince malaysia to accept something and there will be some form of a sweetener for this deal to work. I'm sure i don't need to type out exactly whats been at stake between the two countries

    Cheers

We save even more money by doing that. The jobs created in NZ are directly responsible for an easing of the burden on Australia's welfare

I read a rather interesting thing in a Financial paper yesterday, it would seem China is starting to outsource their really low end gear to a lesser paid nation, rather ironic in a way, the rate of pay in some of the Countries mentioned was around $1.50 per hour, the cheap manufacturing places in India are paying semi skilled workers the princely some of 30 cents per hour, now lets see, I wonder why things can be done so cheap in poorer countires, especially anything that has a decent labour content. I can see how our Governmanet SHOULD use Australian steel, Australian boat builders and all sorts of things to keep us running, and in a way, maybe it would be more beneficial financially than putting people on the dole, there is no real answer to all this, we will continue to buy gear on line (thinking it is only a small transaction, so it won't hurt) just as Governments will make decisions based on cost, politics, stupidity, and simply as "favours" to other countries that we perceive to need to appease and keep as buddies!

As some one who use to do this job
If they followed protocol it would give the australian vendor prefrence.

Where does it specify that in procurement guidelines? Govt can't discriminate against foreign tenders if they tick all the procurement boxes to provide value for money in the expenditure of commonwealth funds. Govt are commited to sourcing at least 10% of their successful procurements through aus (or nz) business (well, businesses that employ less than 200 ppl, I'm not sure what the guidelines state on bigger aus business tenders). In this instance, the local vendor/s were unlucky.
Look, I'm not anti-aust buying or anything but you gotta take the emotion out of the decision and see it for what it is. Govt has other policies/depts in place that deal with local jobs etc. At least the ppl operating the boats will be aussies, employed aussies.

Everyone has a very fair point and it is nice to help our economy where ever we can but this also means buying OS at times, The US is in a hole and you would be surprised by how much places like AUS are helping them to recover,, I was talking to a guy the other day about importing a boat, He lives in florida and he said to me that AUS and Euro are keeping him and his family with a roof over there head his local to export sales have gone through the roof in the last 2 years, Just think if the US market crashes the whole world feels it and it's bad news for everyone. Yes buy local where you can but just have a thought also that if other contries are making money too its also good for us sometimes VIA Tourism, Healthy stock market.... It is a same that he was not awarded the contract but I would also like to see the difference in tender prices ?
