    catching tailor...

Hey boys just heading up to fraser chasing tailor next month, now normally id use a wire trace when fishing tailor but this year i want to use mono/flurcarbon leader instead a bloke at tackleworld suggested it. What pound leader does everyone use and brand? cheers look forward to your help.

j_man I used 60lb blackmagic when spinning for tailor at straddie. You can go lighter if you want but be prepared to loose good fish.

j-man im heading up next weekend when are you heading up. wen fishing for tailor i usually use 20-30 pound leader for pillies and 30 pound for throwing lures. but if the big boys are out ill up it to 50 pd and have never really lost many fish.

30 or 40lb Jinkai here. It's not too stiff and knots easily. Been using it for ever.
    Cheers

A good tailor can bite through 80lb no dramas at all if it's down his throat. Hook setup will determine if you neeed wire or not. Ben

    Hey buddy

Now if the tailor are thick and the action is fast I would highly recommend using a 18 inch wire trace ganged up with 4 x 4/0 or if the fish are good size 3 x 5/0's but if you have to work hard for your fish and are fishing night time I would recommend as a min 60lb mono or flurocarbon if this is your preference. Now many a good fish have been lost fishing mono leaders when the big boys come on at fraser and I don't believe using mono makes any difference with Tailor as they are such an aggressive feeder. now different baits can make a huge difference If fishing night time and if you can get your hands on some fresh bonito the big greenback love it ganged up on 2 or 3 5/0's. Try north of Waddy point at this time of year and you won't be disappointed...

Thanks mate have taken that all on board, yeah i normally fish a 12" wire trace but the guy at the fish store said maybe using a heavy leader instead so i though maybe id give that a whirl, maybe i should just stick to my old routine i mean it hasent failed in the past so. yeah we will camping north of waddy just past orchid so its right at my front door. cant wait, love this time of year!!

    Re: catching tailor...

Just came back from a week at fraser and using 50 pound leader on everything. Using single hooks for Jewies at night time got a bit ridiculous when the big tailor hooked up as you will normally only land half of the big fish due to bit through on the leader. Again depends on the hook setup.

We always have a good look at the water clarity. If its dirty - use wire, if clean - use mono (just make sure of the guage).

We did well (approx. five each per session) on Main and Flinders last week at Straddie.

Good luck and let us know how you go.

    Re: catching tailor...

yeah I have had them eat through 30lb fluorocarbon no worries.

Not sure why people would recommend Mono, it is softer and easier for the fish to bite off.

    Re: catching tailor...

i have been going to fraser for 20+ years and have never used wire....

However i mainly use lures so generaly the tailor takes the single 4/0's or 6/0's depending on the time of the year regardless of night or day.

supa29... wouldn't be surprised if we weren't our there with u..... we are the pink shirt crew.

j_man..... there are plenty of people here who have learnt from experience in terms of wire or not..... i personally don't use it... but as others have posted.... it doesn't heart to have it with u... it is better to be prepared...

IF i do use bait.... bonito or slabs of unbled tuna work the treat...

we are heading up in the next couple of days.... you can't miss us... OLD FARTS
