    Re: Gar

North Pine Dam is full of them and easily caught in all the publicly accessible areas.

    Re: Gar

Burley trail and a bait jig works well. About 8 bucks a kilo at Morgans seafood at Scarborough if you don't want to get drenched.

    Re: Gar

Might be a bit early yet for NPD, but as mentioned burley up with bread, no 12 long shank and a tiny bit of prawn on the hook. Suspended under a float works best.
I've used bait jigs in salt to catch them quick, (tiny bit of prawn on each hook once again) never been game to use a jig in fresh, even though theoretically it is classed as one hook if you read the glossy brochures.

Agree - North Pine Dam has always worked for me - but requires a stocked impoundment permit!

    Re: Gar

Freedom, if you dont have an SIP, I reckon Youngs crossing below the dam would be worth a shot.

    Re: Gar

I have a SIP Feral, but basically only chase the NPD gar when I want to give the grandkids a bit of fun. I usually get my gar (for eating and trolling baits) when I'm out at Mud, berleying them up close in to the island. The gar you get out there are huge.
I often fish Young's Crossing from the canoe in summer time, mainly chasing mullet using the same rig that you use for gar. I also catch a lot of bream and the odd bass there as bycatch but I've never caught a single gar. Go figure!

    Re: Gar

The gar in the dam are snub-nose gar which can live and breed in the freshwater of the dam, even though they are normally found in the bays and estuaries along the coast.
