Thread: Capacitor/power supply to stop sounder switching off when starting the outboard

HDS7 Specs say supply voltage 10-18 VDC, it's not unusual for a perfectly good battery to go under 10V while cranking then you still have to subtract any volts lost between the battery terminals and the sounder.

Ask Lowrance what the cutoff voltage is then go & measure it.

been watching this thread with interest for answers to a mates problem, he has two Lowrance units and they will turn off intermittently at start up, sometimes one will turn off and sometimes the other will turn off and sometimes none will turn off. 4 way battery switch on duel batts

will have to get the old brain into gear and go do some multimeter work

can't say it's only a Lowrance issue, I've got a Furuno 585 and it does it on that and also a Hummingbird combo unit
that I use as a GPS and it doesn't do it.....I know mine is a wiring issue, but just haven't had the time to fix it....
I know my batteries are ok (brand new big bastards) and looked under the floor at the wiring and know the problem is
in the birds nest somewhere....will rewire the whole boat when I get a chance, but hey, it still works at the moment

Have had simular problems with my father’s boat after some testing found it was the battery switch. Bypass the switch and all was good so I replaced the switch with a better one. Check the amp rating bigger is better

regardles the reliable solution is to run the sounder direct off the "B" battery and start off the "A" battery.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.

    RUBBISH!
The reliable solution is to find out what's wrong & fix it properly, how is your solution reliable if there's a HR connection, contact, undersize cable or failing battery?

It's not those little details, it's the big things that make the difference.

I had a similar problem with my motor and eventually after even trying a small batterry in the circuit the problem was with the starter motor. Seems there was a small imperfection in the armature causing a voltage drop when the motor was started. Once this was fixed I haven't had a problem.

Maybe something in your circuit is causing a voltage drop, so work out if you have a voltage drop and use a tester to find the voltage drop.

Hi Taylor2. Sounds like everyone is onto something but keep it simple and start at the start.

Battery terminals/connections and battery switch. Just because the terminals are tight doesn't mean the connection is good (bad earth cost me $800 once). Horrible way to find out you need to clean the terminals every so often.

I had the same problem when I was running from my second battery, It was allmost stuffed and not holding charge so replaced it and that fixed my problem.

My guess is if this just started to happen then your battery is on the way out.

    Cheers
    Brett
