I am thinking Ipad or Galaxy Tab in particular. I was thinking of say a Ram Mount - eg http://www.ram-mount.com/NewProducts...5/Default.aspx and then a waterproof case that would still allow touch screen use, but would (without damage to it) fit into the mount...given the insanely cheap mapping from Navionics, the screen size and speed and the true GPS this would be a great way to Navigate. I would definitely want it waterproofed though...

yeh not sure of mounting options for other tablets (pretty sure a dedicated product doesn't exist) but ipad is achievable (expensive, but achievable). You can buy waterproof cases/bags for most tablets at a reasonable price that are advertised as still being able to use the device whilst enclosed. I don't think it will be too long until you see products like what you are after for the big selling tablets? It's certainly a hot topic around various forums anyway.
I'm experimenting and checking some out atm, got some waterproof cases en route from the states. Got some ideas for self mounting as well, still playing around.
Gumdrop do some pretty neat shock proof cases, not sure of waterproofing though

Those dont seem to be waterproof mate...but have a look at these:

The ram-lite cradle that Ram sell should fit, but Im making enquiries. Then you have to buy the ram to suit. These last 2 components though should then fit any other 10 inch tab, so updating your tab down the track shouldnt mean updating cradle and ram mount...

Scott, are you intending to use the Ipad for navigation use? Wouldn't that restrict you to 3G serviced areas?

No lovey - like the iphone4 I have its full GPS, and only assisted by the service towers to make it more accurate when in range, but my iphone 4 out of service range is a very accurate GPS. I use Navionics on it which cost me about $20 for all maps from memory - they download fully, so again with cartography you dont need to be in a service area or wifi etc to have access to them. Apart from glare which can be mitigated, this is an area where boaties can really have a win if they have an ipad for other reasons also...

Whoa - those German made ones are $400...well for me I think its either the Griffin water resistant (rain 200mm for an hour) or the new Lifeproof (yet to be released but the iphone 4 one is very good it seems) which is actually waterproof. Then a generic cradle from Ram Mount and the arm.

OK - got my Iconia a month or so ago. Just upgraded to Honeycomb 3.2. This is a very nice tab. Just downloaded Navionics, so I will let you know how it goes. The (built in chipset) GPS works well on it. I am looking at a generic tab bracket from Ram Mount and a cheap waterproof slip case for it with an incar charger type connector to keep it charged.

Ooohh...looks very nice. I like a 10 inch screen with Navionics! Easy route building and tracking. Good search options and Newsstand which looks interesting also.

Alot of blokes trying the ipad on motorcycles (cause of the great gps/planning apps to use) and have found that when in a sealed waterproof case/bag they overheat and shut down. And rumours that some have died seemingly due to vibrations on rough terrain. So make sure if you use one then ensure the case you use is ventilated for cooling and rubber mounted to minimize vibes.
Bloody Apple! I will see how my Acer goes. Its a pretty heavy duty bit of kit, and hopefully it will be ok. I will stick it in a zip lock bag and use it on the dash and see how it goes before getting the mounts etc.

you can get a product called aquapac that is a dedicated water proof, tablet sized bag rated for up to 5m or something submersion. Dunno about ventilation but I can imagine it would need to come out occassionally to cool down or be switched off when not needed. I dropped an asus tablet about 12ft down a set of concrete steps and thought the worse. Other than a few cosmetic injuries it survived intact and still very usable so some tablets at least are pretty robust .

Tallon accessories have a mount for the I pad.
Bought the ram mounts for boat and car with universal tab cradle - all aircraft alloy so should be sweet. Will post pics. Have tried it with a zip seal bag in the car on the dash for hours whilst using google maps in the car and no overheat. Very cool.
