Hey fellow ausfishers. I am a very keen angler living on the gold coast chasing almost all fish know to the area. Moving to tasmania to study at the AMC for 4 years.. wondering if anyone can give me some info on the fishing in the area? What fish are in the areas? Will my 429 proline angler be sufficient to take down there and use in the rivers? Just any general info would be much appreciated.

It's a great place to fish. I caught trout from the banks of rivers, and of course fly fishing up in the mountains is terrific!
Talk to the locals about river conditions, lures and weight. Be aware there are restrictions, including a closed season, and some areas are lure or bait only! Trout are great fun to catch, and the scenery is simply awesome.
That said - I'll never go back 'cause it's just too damn cold down there! Have fun,

You will love it down there definately take the boat. I spent a year at AMC in 2009, and caught the "Trout Addiction". I didn't take my boat and regretted it, that said I focussed on Land Based fishing which i haven't done in a long time and enjoyed it immensely. Surf fishing off the beaches is excellent for salmon and flathead and best of all, almost everywhere you go down there is free camping including the best trout lakes! If your camping in the high lands (central Lakes) be aware the weather can go from 25 degrees and sunny to -5 degrees all in one day. ( I experienced this in January) Camping was great from Jan to end of May early June until Winter kicked in and it rained for 10 week ends in a row!
Light tackle bream gear works a treat on trout, and if you need Fly fishing gear drop in a see the bloke at the "Essential Fly Fisher" in Launceston. He is a good bloke, gives good advice, competative prices and has been known on a number of occasions to give free fly fishing lessons in the car park. Thanks to him a scored my biggest Brown (5pound) on one of his flies. Fly Fishing is like a cult religion down there and this shop is part of it, but he is willing to try and convert you to the dark side. PS: Just don't ask him if he sells bait!

G'day Ryan. That's going to be a big temperature shock moving from QLD to Tassie!
Grab some neoprene waders. These are like wearing trackie dacks - super comfortable and warm in cold water. There is a lot of wading for fish (fly fishing the shallows) in Tassie and highly recommended.
When you take your boat on the ferry, you will be charged for two cars as it takes up two car spaces so be prepared for a double bill when you get to the terminal in Melbourne.
I've only ever fished over there once so am no authority on the place but loved it! We camped on the shores of Arthur's Lake in the central highlands and caught some great fish on dry flies. Talk to the tackle shop guys though as these fish had unbelivable eyesight and could pick rediculous differences in size 16 flies in 2 foot chop!!
2-3kg spin gear and 6wt fly gear should see you amongst most of the species there.
