    thanks gon fishun.

what do u mean "for storage only"?

would not having this pin be the cause of my large amount of free play in the wheel?

when i feel the cable from underneath the helm, it feels like it is firmly in place, but this is subjective because i am not sure how firm it is supposed to be and whether it is locked in or not....?

Ok, got it now. Just had a perusal under the dash.
The helm where the cable slots in, has a spring loaded clip that locks onto the cable when pushed in, and it has an audible click when it is located. That little hole is where you insert the clip pin to remove cable. With the pin clipped in, as per pic, you cannot push the removal clip in. I would say it is a safety guard in case of vibration etc.
    Hope this helps.

Not having the pin in would not cause any free play.
Get somebody to turn the steering wheel while you watch it at the helm and make sure it is not moving in and out. Even better, release it and push it back in and make sure it is all the way home.

thanks for your effort Gon Fishun!

So, I am guessing this pin would not impact on the free play I am seeing in my steering wheel.

OK - I had the play.

I am very fortunate that I can lay on my back, turn the wheel and observe the other side (cable side) of the helm at the same time.

I turn the wheel and the outer sheath hardly moves (maybe 1-2mm).

I cannot source any obvious failure mode where any noise may be emanating from either.

How do I release it? (I assume this is the outer sheath you are referring to)

I have tried to pull it out - without luck - no matter how hard I try (and I consider myself strong).

An interesting observation I can report on is this - I can see the cable (via the transparent protective tube) move the same amount when I turn the wheel during the initial free play movement - so it may prove that the internal gearing is still OK and not shagged.

I am hoping this observation can further assist our efforts.

This is really getting weird Splash, there should be almost zero freeplay this is a new cable right?

I'd email Teleflex and ask them how much freeplay to expect on a brand new setup like yours.
I don't have that much & mine is 25 years old, I consider my helm & cable simply worn out.

I would be calling Teleflex? If no joy, you may have to pay someone to fix it for you.

    OK -

I called the Teleflex dealer (3 x BLA dealers) and no-one could help me.

I emailed Teleflex USA last Sunday and still no response.

More short videos have been taken - this time showing the excess steel cable at the output of the helm moving the amount of free play (now about 5mm and not 30 mm as I previously stated in an earlier post by mistake).

Videos taken from underneath the Helm (apologies for poorish video lighting, etc) :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDiu9miB4-M
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnXlUezt8y0

Previous video supplied showing wheel play:

Anyone who has the manual steering on their rigs - hwo much free play do you have, and how does it compare to the freeplay I am experiencing?

    Let me know your thoughts...

    Splash,
i ve just got a new boat with mechanical steering, it has a small amount of play, between 1-2 cm before it takes up, it doesnt worry me at all and i thought it was perfectly normal, it doesnt look as loose though as what your video shows.
