Thread: GL3 or IMX?

    GL3 or IMX?

Well the heading of the post is more of a trick as I have already bought an IMX.

    I owned a GLoomis spin rod PR842 Gl3 6-12 lb 2Pc and broke it.

I liked the rod and had caught some good fish on it, as a matter of fact the 75cm Mulloway was caught on it in it's broken state, so minus the top two runners

Got the new IMX 1 Piece, and it doesn't really feel any different.
I am wondering what is better about IMX as compared to GL3.. not a lot I suspect.

I think you'll find that there is a fair bit of difference - IMX is higher modulus than GL3 ..... if you had the same rod in both the IMX would be a thinner / lighter blank but able to generate the same power - The sensitivity of IMX is better / plus it would probably cast better with less effort. GL3 is more robust than IMX.

Yes it actually does feel a little less robust, now you mention it.

    cheers

It would be noticable ....... I have a GL3 baitcaster that I cant kill - though it feels a bit agricultural now when compared with some of my newer rods ....... the GL3 makes a great choice if gear is getting knocked about in a tinny

    Re: GL3 or IMX?

Took it out again the other day.

I once caught a 90cm Jewie on the GL3 (and a 75cm Jewie after it was broken) and it handled it pretty good.

The IMX is so finesse feeling I don't think it would handle a 90 cm Jewie.

Do you really think it has more power?
I will be interested to see how it handles something with a bit of attitude, it just seems too light to tussle with a 10-15lb fish.

might have to save up for a GL3... bugga

    Re: GL3 or IMX?

    It is an IMX PR-842 - 7' - 6-12lb
The GL3 was a two piece (PR-842 2S), in saying that I guess that might be another reason it was more robust.

These rods were marketed in the US as a "Popping rod", from what I gather they rig a live shrimp to a float and use it on sand flats for redfish (no idea what they are).
Fishos found the rod a good all rounder for plastics, surface poppers and small hard bodies, and is now marketed with that in mind.

Don't get me wrong the IMX is a very nice rod for the estuary, but I wonder how it will go if some of our bigger
    visitors show up.

    Don't under sell it,
you'll be suprised what you can do with it, i have landed 12lb barra on my 4-8lb loomis without too many problems
Don’t take life too seriously, It isn’t permanent

This is something that you need to get your head around - the light IMX will handle anything that the GL3 will ..... they are rated as pretty well the same rod..... but as I said initially - the IMX will be a finer / lighter rod .... . with faster recovery on casting & improved sensitivity. As you move higher in modulus it enables blank desiners to use thinner wall sections & less weight of material - this is what you are now experiencing.
i'll give you an example ..... I've been landing Jewfish to 90cm on an Egrell S1 ..... this is a rod designed for bream fishing - it feels way too light & fragile ..... but if fished well is clearly capable.
A rod does not need to feel like a broomstick to be a capable & powerful fishing tool -
The only real downside is that an IMX if pushed over the edge (highstick) will probably go bang before the GL3

MRD, she's rated to 12lb. Run 3-4lb of drag through it without high sticking and you'll get a feel & look of what it'll handle, you might even surprise yourself
