    Hi all

Went fishing a few weeks ago at curtain arti and caught this. What fish is it and are those bars near the tail as sharp as they look?

Looks like a brown unicorn fish to me. They are a member of the surgeon fish group. Bit hard to tell but did it have a bit of a projection on the head just in front of the eyes?

i would say that it looks to be a hump-nosed unicornfish. not quite as ugly as the one in the bible but looks very similar.

Hi Freeeedom dont know about the projection near the eyes, I was more concerned with those nasty looking things near the tail.

The surgeon fishes get their name from the scalpel-like blades on either side just before the tail fan. The illustration in Grant of the brown unicorn fish shows two on each side. The trevallies however have a ridge of hard scales coming to a fairly sharp point on either side of the tail which can also do some damage in a large fish.
