    Bricked in the Coomera

Not such an exciting story but might be a bit interesting.

I was fishing land-based in the Coomera on Sat night, was getting to high tide.

I was fishing with one heavy rod with a large chunk of mullet out and at the same time I was passing time flicking a lightly presented mullet cube out on a 1/0 circle hook with pea size sinker and 15 lb mono leader.

The heavy gear was not getting a touch but I was hooking a few rat bream on the light gear there was nothing over 25cm.

So you guess it, with the light 1-3kg rod I threw out a cube of mullet and got hammered by a large fish, it did a screaming run then stopped as I tried to turn it, which I didn't and this time it did a run up the river parallel to the bank.

Now I have caught some reasonable large fish on this light rod (55cm grunter 80cm salmon), but this fish just was not getting tired, It was a game of me slowly bringing the fish within 5 meters of the bank then it simple turned and went for it, after about 10 mins of this it bite me off and I was surprised I had lasted that long.

I would say either a Jew or a cod? But no head-shakes, so I ruled out Jew or large flathead.

The fish had some real weight and power, that's why I am thinking it was a big heavy fish.

Anyway pretty interesting that the heavy gear and big bait didn't get a nudge but the light gear hooked an unstoppable.

I went back the next night with heavy leaders and heavier rods, not a bite.

    cheers

The Coomera River makes me think bull shark, as I fish for them in the area, and a few guys I know will get about 3 or 4 a night during Summer. From what I know, they're not as active during winter though. I've seen smaller models landed on traces as light as 20lb mono (jaw hooked). Also, with no headshakes, it could've been a big ray, but they generally hug the bottom.

Yeah might have been a Bullshark, I was surprised it didn't snap me off quicker though.
I was thinking bullsharkt myself later on after I posted, definitely not a ray.
I'll have to venture down there again for another crack at it.

Not a cod if it ran along the rock wall without finding a hole to dive into. I would hazzard a guess that it could be a ray or big shovel nose that took the cube due to the lack of head shakes.

My money is on a big shovelnose. Methinkx with only a 15lb leader a bull shark would have bitten you off on the first run. On that subject, are you sure you were bitten off and not snapped off? Moot point I guess!

Whichever, that's why we fish - all those unanswered mysteries keep us coming back for more, eh.

    Better luck next time.
