Tough in the Pine, but a Great Day

Took a mate for a mid week fish on the Pine. Late start due to the school drop offs so thought we would try for some livies and see if the lizards were still around at the mouth.

Took a while to find any bait, and suffered a major setback when I managed to cast my near new net over a huge snag which appeared to be the remains of a bougainvillea vine washed down with the floods - what a spiky mess. Decided to bring out the old net and try to salvage what's left of the new one on the weekend.

Finally managed to find some bait so filled a bucket and headed to the mouth.

My mate does not fish normally so I set up a line for him and was just doing my own when he commented that the line felt strange. At that moment the fish must of come to a similar conclusion because it took off and started peeling line from his reel. We were fishing fairly light so there was a bit of excitement as I tried to tighten his drag plus explain what was going on. After a couple of more runs he finally boated a nice flattie of 55 or 60cm.

Great I thought we are on the spot - but unfortunately that was it for the day. Moved a couple of times and even shot out to Garnet Rock for a look but could not get any more bites.

Once the tide started coming in the weed became a problem and made it almost unfishable.

Still, great day on the water and cleared away a few of the stresses of work.

Good luck to anyone venturing out, and pick the tides a bit more carefully while this weed is around if you are looking to fish the mouth.

Hi Dave, thanks for the report mate, i was going to have a go in the Pine today but decided not to after copping that bloody slimey weed out the front yesterday. Good to see you got one decent fish, all i got was a flounder and half a ton of slime, i hope it goes soon.

nice fish lapras. yep the weed was pretty bad on the weekend. easier to manage if you are throwing or drifitng with plastics, still a pain though. dont know bout other guys and gals but I havent had much luck at the mouth lately. its a bit hit and miss at the moment

I use plastics and have found that moving between pylons is the best way to go, i motor out 30m and drift in with the tide chucking the plastic as i move, get hit more often than not by flatties. Nuclear chicken seems to be the only plastic the buggers hit as i try the lot and only get a fish when the red and green is on the jig head?! Mind you, the bigger and better quality fish are still in the upper reaches of the river
