    New Gear, Need Help :)

    Hi guys,
new to the site, and would like to get some advice..

im resonable new to fishing i guess you could say, im 20 and i have been taken when i was younger etc but for the last say year ive been very keen on getting into it more, im after a few new rods and reels so i have pretty much everything i need for watever fishing i decide to do.
i fish our local dams for redfin etc, i have been fishing quite abit in sydney hourbour and around there lately, i also fish rivers for trout etc

many land based but some times on a boat out in the harbour..

so as you can see i fish a few different locations and which i would like to get set up for, at the moment i currently have a shimano caenan baitcast real on a BOSS 8-12kg graphite baitcaster rod, running 20lb braid and 30lb vanish leader.. i use this for fishing cod and carp etc at our local fishing spots..

i would like to get a spin rod for trout and light fishing, i was thinking a shimano sonic pro spin rod 2-4kg or 3-5kg? and a shimano accort 1000 reel? with say 12lb braid or so? as bcf have a deal going atm both for 90 buks, is the reel to small? should i maybe get the size 2500?, the reels seem very smooth, ino they arnt top quality but they seem good enough for what ill be doing

or do you have any other suggestions for that class?

i also want a spin rod that i can use on the harbour, for trevally and what ever else i can find out there, i was thinking a shimano sonic pro rod again, but im not sure on what weight? 6-8kg? graphite and a shimano size 4000 reel? run 30 braid?

that way i would have a rod for all my fishing, a baitcaster- for when they are better of being used, a light spin rod for small trout and redfin etc and then another spin rod for when i fish out on the harbour and places like that...

the reason i choose shimano gear is because i realy like their stuff and i would prefer to stick with them but i am open to suggestions

    any help is greatly appreciated

gday, since no-one has replied i will.

sounds like you have a good idea of what you want. i think it does depend on the type of fishing you are doing for example are you using bait or lures? basically

2-4kg for your light fishing i guess but depends on the size of trout you are after. i would put a 2500 or 3000 stradic or same size sol on that maybe. i think a 1000 sized reel would be too small for 2-4kg. would be good for a 1-3kg trout rod though......

For your harbour rod. if its for trevally and snapper like you say. i would go for a 4-7kg rod. but if you fish really deep water with fast current then a slightly heavier rod may suffice. generally a 4-7kg rod with a 4000 stradic or sol would be perfect for flicking plastics around. dont go too heavy or short rod as you want to be able to cast a fair distance. 30 lb braid is way too heavy for this imo. i would use 8lb - 15lb depending on your expected catch of course.

    hope this is helpful.

    cheers

I would agree the 1000 will tackle a lot of stream trout though you might be in trouble if you hook up on a 3lb rainbow.

Though in saying that, using gear that is too heavy can kill the enjoyment of trout fishing and also impede small light lures.
