Rerating a boat for more HP

I have a friend who has just purchased a Sea Jay 4.55 which is factory rated at 50HP and(?)Kgs.He has had the boat rerated,(he tells me)for 115 though he will be installing a 60.
Keep in mind that so far there are NO modifications carried out in support of a larger HP and heavier motor. So how can this be????
Surely, the only person legally capable of upgrading a hull is either the manufacturer or a naval architect, who would have to show drawings and calculations in support of his ammendment, and for a small boat cost prohibitive after market.
    Is this going on?
    Is it legal?
Or is it just the fact that the people who are having this done are accepting that all is legal when in fact it has not been tested in a court of law as yet.
You can bet that when someone is killed, the insurance company will challenge the legallity, and I would not like to be the owner or worse, the ammending agent at that time.

Its a bit like importing a boat from the States, insuring it,and finding out later when there is an accident that there is no Australian compliance, suddenly the insurance company runs the other way---tag----youre it---surprise

    Hi Albey

I have a Stessle yellowfin which is rated to max 140 hp. After purchasing a new 140 hp Suzuki 4 stroke ; the sea trial was very disapointing. The dealer offered me a 175 hp for not much more [ few thousand ] which i had to accept. The thing is i had to get the boat tested and certified to carry a larger motor for insurance purposes. This was easily and cheaply obtained they took some measuments and said it was fine. Certifacation papers turned up in the mail and everything is sweet .

    Cheers Graham

Rerating the HP to 115hp sounds like some bull from your mate...

If it's getting rated to 60-70hp I'm pretty sure the max weight for the hull won't be allowed to be exceeded which is 120kg.

I know Boat builders will rate hulls up as long as it doesn't exceed the max engine weight. I've had recent talks with Makocraft & they will rate the boat i was looking at up to 90hp from 75 but not if it exceeds the max engine weight.
