Hi all
Considering buying the Garmin GPSMAP 451s chartplotter/sounder. I cant find information if this devise can be used just as a chartplotter, just a sounder or is it always a split screen?
Hope this makes sense
Cheers

I have the 551s and it can be used in any of the ways you described. I did look at this model when I was doing my research and remember it being very similar to mine.

Just went and looked at my manual for the 551, it also the manual for the 451 and various other models. So one would assume it would provide all those screens as you described
Hey Dave went out and got the Garmin 451s today. Been reading the manual and does do all those things. N ow all I have to do is install it

hi Vince, if you dont mind me asking what was the best price you could get and where from? can these display nmea data as well?
cheers ryan
Hi Ryan
Mate i tried to talk the guy at Whitworths Marine at Breakfast Creek down more. The normal price is $799 but reduced to $649, he couldnt/wouldnt take more off it. He only has one unit left at that price.
"Supports NMEA 0183 data, DSC and sonar NMEA input support for the DPT, MTW and VHW sentences"....WTF? . Guess thats a yes for the NMEA lol.
Hope this helped. If not let me know and I will send u a copy of relevant pages in the owners manual via email.
Cheers

Charlie,
if that is what it states then it only supports an older version of the nmea protocol. (so you cant hook your engine up to it.) you will however be able to connect it to other devices. ie a dsc radio or a furuno sounder.
the sentence support, is basically how the unit talks across the nmea 0183 protocol, sort of like a versions of english, us, uk, aus, yes similiar but different in spelling and the way sentences are strung together.
So if youre keen to use the nmea functions then you need to just check the device you want it to talk to supports the "sentences".

Honda.
definatly supports nmea 2000 and will support engine interface as well as GFS10 fuel flow/level sensor for those who dont have nmea 2000 compliant engines great little unit.
p.s dont forget will need nmea starter kit to interface ect
