They are generally better in the warmer months. The run of small blacks starts in December off SEQ, further North starts earlier. There are lots of good charter boats around to put you onto one. Where abouts are you and how soon are you looking to start chasing them? How much you wanna spend?

    Re: Marlin Fishing

    If the budget isnt tight....

Your options on the east coast of Australia for "normal" billfish times are basically.

-light tackle sailfish and black marlin in NQ (cairns- townsville) from now until about sept.

    - Heavy tackle black marlin in cairns, cooktown, port douglas (on the GBR) in Sept-nov.

-Light tackle black marlin and sailfish in SEQ (fraser island- gold coast) from Oct-march/april.

-Medium tackle Black Marlin, Striped marlin in Port Stephens from Jan-march.

If I had to put my money on one time or another, I would go to Cairns in the end of Oct, Sunshine Coast in December or Port in Feb.

Give us some more info and we may be able to give you more help.

Also in the West check out your options at Exmouth. They have a super reliable billfish fishery.

Mate would like to hear more about marlin/sailfish in these areas if you don't mind sharing a bit of info. I have tried a little in the past around Fitzroy Island and Jenny Louise without success and felt a bit like Makeral fishing with teasers Just tried trolling with gars). Theres not alot written on it and alot of water out there....and Makeral. Cheers

Mate depends what you want to catch, Black Blue Stripe Sail????? if you want small blacks to medium blacks and or Blues and Sails your better off taken your own boat and hit the goldy or sunny coast. If you want Big blacks eg. 400lb to 1granders then hit Cairns..... Tradition charters is a good start and Tim is the skipper, boat is a custom built 49 footer and an unreal fishing platform. he tagged alot of fish last season and was named mr consistant up there from the boys as he was on the money most days out.
    Cheers

Check out some of the charters on the Game Fishing Hub website.
All very experienced. If you haven't fished for billfish before you might want to try some light tackle first and not head straight to Cairns for the big ones..

    Re: Marlin Fishing

Im going to give it a good shot this season for the small black marlin...

Could some one give me a hot tip on gear. I was going to purchase a set of 6-8kg tiagra rods with tyrnos 16 with 8kg stren. Would these rods have enough get up and go for the small blacks and by catch. I previously had 2 x 8kg tiagra rods and i felt they still were a bit stiff for the light game.
    Any info would be appricated.
