In Search of the Big Reds

    Hey Guys,

Will be moving near Mackay in about a month or so and was just after some pointers when it come to hooking onto red emperor. Dont expect any secret GPS marks but just a general run down of what exactly I need to be looking for: e.g water depth, bottom, tides, times, time of year etc etc any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Also how is that region fishing atm?

guys I have been reading through past posts and I can gather that you should be fishing around the 50m mark in open water where there is a bit of structure. Though in saying that not really sure were to go???..... Would really appreciate any help hey, I dont want to spend the next few years searching the sea as I will only get an opportunity to get out every now and then and I cant stand it when i go home without a feed- which is all to a common occurance for me!...

Mate you nedd to put the time in and search the grounds yourself. Look out in the deeper water away from structure and you will find them on a little bump on the sounder or a patch of rubble or weed in the middle of nowhere. I cant help you anymore then that as I dont live up there.

Half the fun is looking for them. Working out where they will be due to tidal influences and and then working out when they are feeding and following that up with your tackle being correct and the rig being just right , the bait presentation being perfect and lastly your fight being not too heavy and not too light.
How could anyone tell you all those things in one thread.

I would start at the 50 metre line and just follow the contour line until you see something on your sounder. See something like a change in the bottom line thickness or just a little rise then fall with a blip on it. Stop and have a drop there and then. Big fleshy baits with big hooks and hang on for what might just be the spotX revealed. Oh and don't forget to lean over put a cross on the side of the boat so you can find that spot again.

    Cheers
    Mate

Angla pretty much nailed it for you mate. Big baits, 8/0 9/0 hooks. I'm up Cairns way and the ideas are simalar. Incidently we fish all night for these and large Mouth Nannygai. Most of our best fish are caught between midnight and sun up. While most people have choked down for the night.

    Cheers

Re: In Search of the Big Reds

    Hey mate,
Getting red tips and ground is basically like asking for someones EFTPOS card and their PIN.....and there is a reason for that......THEY ARE BLOODY HARD TO CATCH AND FIND. I can pretty much guarantee when you finally land one, you wont be giving your spots away, even general marks.
But don't be worried, there is enough help out there to put you in the right direction.
Firstly, I'd probably do what I just did and do a search on ausfish for "Mackay Reds". There are a few on here with depth, approximate locations and other handy tips. Next I would go and buy a GPS book and a chart (or get an IPhone/Ipad application) and start putting some spots down on the map which look likely. I've only caught about 1/50th of the quantity of reds as some of the other guns on here, but the main tips are time on the water, a good rod and reel (search for Spot82,vertico posts/threads on here) and bait presentation. Big hussar or mullet fillets with the tail still on and I always have a bit of glow tube and PE tackle fly hanging off the bottom. If you dont have a decent combo, go to your local tackle store up there, throw a bit of money there way and I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't give you some reef areas to try.
I havent fished Mackay but looking at the chart i have a good idea where i'd start. As stated above, the contour lines are a good start. Getting some good weather might be your biggest problem.
All the best and keep us all updated on how you go.Sorry I couldn't be much more help but I've been through it all in the last few years. Guarantee you'll have fun trying!!

Re: In Search of the Big Reds

Appreciate the feedback guys, just from what you told me there without giving any spots away has pointed me in the right direction. I will be based at Moranbah and only having the weekends to fish where I can get a leave pass from the missus will probably see very limited fishing. I think from what you guys have said putting in big hours on the water is something that I will find hard to do considering my circumstances and hours of work and where I will live, I'm not too sure what months are best to fish for them but considering I will only be getting out there once a month or so (if winds allow it) it will probaly be a few years before I find decent spots. Living in Darwin i know it has taken me a long time to fihure out the times/tides/places to fish and like other people have said i wouldnt be giving out these spots (well on a forum anyway). Anyway sure I will have some frustrating trips over the next year or so trying to figure these things out- as something new to me once again. Just wish i could win lotto so I could actually do some decent fishing and get the time to figure out the spots! Frustrating. Sorry for having a winge- just now what i am for- was frusting time when i first came to Darwin, sure there will be many temper tantrums driving back to Moranbah with an empty esky! Fun times ahead. Anyway will throw up a few reports when i have been out, move down there mid next month. Once again guys appreciate the pointers yu have throw my way. Will also be investing in a furno sounder and will be looking for the bottom that produces around the 50m mark.

I have a couple of TLD20's loaded with 50 pound braid, also spin reels loaded with 50 pound too. Intend to use these rigged up with paternoster rigs- 60-80 pound leader while using good quality hooks- most likely black magic 8/0's. Will use a variety of baits and try to figure out what goes okay- will try a few whole sea mullet and then all your other baits as well. Pumped to get a few of these fish!

BTW what is a PE tackly fly?

righto, those things look deadly- might have to invest in a few!!

Mark, I have actually heard a few guys still opt for mono over braid. I have a couple of 320 GTI's loaded with 30 pound mono so might have to take thsoe out and see how they fair against braid line.... only problem is that I have too hook onto a few!!
