    Garmin 750s Sounder

Interested in feedback from people who have this unit with the sounder/fishfinder, from what i understand and seen, Garmin are pretty much there with easy accurate chartplotter aspects and seem to be pick of the bunch, but what about the sounder aspect?

ie does it matter to what depths typically in the bay? does it matter if its a garmin, lowrance/furuno in depths to 50 metres ( and not asking about structure scan etc) , after that do sounders like furuno 620/585 and FJC come into their own?

I suppose im asking how good is the Garmin sounder/fishfinder on a unit like the 750S?

    cheers

I have one and find it more than adequate for my needs, and that includes some reasonably deep water, but I have been told, if you upgrade to the 1KW transducer, they are as good as any sounder on the market. I would reckon with depths to 50M the sounder "as is" would be pretty much as good and anything else in that price range.

Sounder-wise it's not a patch on the Furuno. BUT ...... and it's a BIG "but" ..... it works at speed. I had mine working 100% crystal clear at 30 knots the other day in flat water inside Hinchinbrook channel. In choppy water it gets up to 20 knots before it loses the bottom (maintains a depth reading). This is on a Quinnie.

One of the more useful things with the Garmin is when you transfer the track to Home Port it maintains the depth of each point on the track which is very handy planning return trips.

The sounder is adequate at 50m. I have mine set on 5m bottom lock which flattens the terrain for easily seeing fish and this also shows the terrain in relief at the top of the screen. The Furuno does this bit so much better with more detail even though the pixel count is lower. Now I have moved the screen so it faces directly at me it is much brighter (the Furuno has much reduced glare issues).

Overall the Garmin is a great unit for the price and the charts are simply fantastic.

Mike, from the (discussed) areas you want to fish, you wouldn't go passed the 600w transducer. If you can't see the fish on the sounder in the locations you would be fishing....then maybe they're not there.... You be wasting money (that could be spent elsewhere) on the 1kw model. Spending $$$$ on all those rods, reels, and tackle is a different story though.

    Cheers,

wags, i think the FF60 also takes the 600w transducer, wasnt planing on the 1k, i will wait and see how the 750S sounder function goes, but if i get a separate sounder thats the way im leaning.

Im really happy with mine in depths up to 50m its great. Over that depth and I loose bottom picture, but have depth reading. Others on here have reported theirs working at much greater depths with the std 600W tdcr. I need to get into deep water again and test its settings and angle etc.

I love the GPS side of it, fantastic, Garmin are the leader in that field for sure. (Most aircraft I fly have Garmin GPS and radio etc)
