    Lucanus Jig for Swains Reef?

Do you think a coral trout, sweetlip, or red emperor would go for one of these?
Got a trip coming up soon and wouldn`t mind giving them a go. What do you reckon?

    Hi Reggy

I have used the Octa jig at Swains and have caught red throat on this jig so the lucanus would also work.
The problem is the smaller grassies eat the tentacles in a very short time.

Yes, I`ll have to take some packs of spare skirts.

The Gulps get destroyed very quickly around reef areas. Make sure you have something along the lines of Terminator Snapbacks, Strike King Z-Too or Z Man ranges. Glue them to your jig head with a bit of Super glue and hold on

OK Horse, I`ll have to do some homework and find out what they are.

Buck tail jigs would give you a more durable option. Some of the new large heavy duty jig heads and tie your own.

The hooks on the lucanus come in two gauges(med & light). Not sure what weight jig they use med(100g+?)but the 80g had light. The light hooks are fine gauge and really need swapping out for mediums as the fine ones will tear on solid fish.

I've tried them a couple of times on the reef - had one on as a sinker at the bottom of a paternoser rig (they dont require 'jigging apparently, just the action of the boat). I was told that trout love them but at the end of an entire days fishing and plenty of fish- that jig was still on the line and still unmolested. So I dont have too much faith in them.
Also there are a heap of other options for octajigs that are half the price. While you can change the skirts etc on the Lucanus by the time you out lay the money for a jig pus a skirt kit, you could have brought 3 of another brand.

Now Im sure they have their place but for me they are an overpriced lump of lead painted to catch fishermen. I would be more interested in the PE tackle flys for that trip or if you want to use as a sinker, a bucktail jig with a soft plastic teaser (I reckon SLAMs stand up to the pickers better than GULPs btw).
