    Thanks
    Steve
    I tried to do it down the gold coast on Monday - but the tide , wind & swell made it difficult to compare both
    Somerset should allow me the time and conditions to do some comparitive screen shots - I also know what I'm looking at ( bait , active , inactive fish , thermoclines , terrain etc)

    I didn't find the schools of bass that were active when I went out to Somerset .
    Dont worry though - if I see some good examples I'll take a screen shot & put them up

    doesn't the Lowrance HDS unit's computer fill in the blanks on what it recons it sees so you get a better looking picture? I don't know its just what I have been told. and on the bird you have to use your own brain to interpret the screen?

    Re: Humminbird ..... why would you buy one

    Ive had 2 Lowrances, llast one was an LCX27 , great pics but hthe GPS crapped itself, Lowrance basically told me tio buy a new one werent interested in fixin it.

    I decided to update but wanted D/Scan *+& Side Scan, so bought a 898cxsi, it took nme a few trops to get the settings right as its a bit different to the Lowrance, ....noiw its dynamite !!, only issue I have now is the fact that I want a larger screen !!.
    Had a few mates in the boat & they are raving about my HB side scans !!
    But its very different to the Lowrance to get the best out of it by fine tuning the settings,

    Nagg I think you shpould pack that no good 998 ina box & send it to me !!!

    Nice try ! ....... but I will stick with it since I paid for it .

    I still have issues with the quality of Lowrance products - that is why I bought a Humminbird this time

    why would i buy one?

    1. More reliable than other major competitor;
    2. After sales service is better that a few select other;
    3. ability to have SI, DI, 2D and GPS in one unit with no add ons;
    4. innovative and versatile company, always striving to beat its competitors in research and development. one of the main players.

    cheers

I think all sounders would do this to some extent wouldnt they?? i know even my dodgy navman has filters in it that do something like this.

    Re: Humminbird ..... why would you buy one

    hi all. reckon i can weigh in on this one. have been running a bird 787c2i combo for 3 years. been very happy with it. no problems. spots the prawns for me and everything else imho. have just bought the lowrance elite 5 dsi (not hd) for $558 delivered. went up the creek saturday arvo and compared the 2. i noticed that whilst the bird showed the same stuff as the lowrance - the lowrance seemed to magnify every little detail quite significantly. the reason i bought the lowrance can be summed up in one picture. if you haven't checked out oodies screenshot of the tiwi pearl wreck on page 39 electronics, sounder readings sticky, go and have a look. awesome detail.

    cheers davo

    Its all about how the sounder interpretes the signal & then fills in the screen .....
    Now - I'm not talking SI or downscan ..... but standard mode & it is here that I feel that the Lowrance sounders do a better job than the Humminbirds .
    Over the years I've fished out of so many boats with Humminbirds & Lowrances - and I've always felt that the birds lacked something (aside from the colour pallet). Now having both units on my boat my opinion has not changed - particularly when viewing something that I had full confidence in knowing what I was looking at .... ie active bass schools.

    Re: Humminbird ..... why would you buy one

    hey Nagg. based on some extensive research (time wasting), i think you may be right! Do you think is has something to do with the fact that the lowrance HDS is 'Broadband'?? (whether that really means anything?)and that it has a dedicated transducer for only 2d? also there is some healthy debate out there that lowrances structure scan is much better the humminbird SI/DI as they use a seperate skimmer type transducer also and their images are clearer and more defined.

    having said that though its hard to get around the reliability issues with lowrance i think. knowing my luck if i bought a lowrance it would shat itself two days after the warrenty expires. as an overall package in one unit and ease of installation and use, good reliabiity and still good si/di the humminbird is the go i feel but i dont think its better than the lowrance in some major key areas. its a tough decision to make as both brands are pretty dam good.

    Re: Humminbird ..... why would you buy one

    Hi Guys, my experience............

    I had always run Lowrance sounders but bought a Humminbird 981 c sidescan with GPS.

    I kept it in excellent condition and I was really happy with it but then it started failing....... It was out of warrantee so I sent it back hoping to pay for it to be repaired but was told that the unit couldn't/wouldn't be repaired.

    BLA were very nice about it but the best they could do was give me a discount off a new one, I declined as I didn't want to spend more big dollars and end up in the same predicament again.

    A very expensive lesson for me and something that a prospective Humminbird buyer needs to be aware of..............so, no NAGG I wouldn't buy one.
