Nagg, might be a couple of silly questions/thoughts but..

Are you running the lastest software on the h'bird?
What sounder freq are you using on both units? are they both 200 or 200/83 etc...

I own both Lowrance and humminbird and think they are great units. I have an Elite 5 and 798cxi HD SI.

I am looking forward to seeing the comparison images, you have even got me thinking about doing some experiments myself.

    Cheers,
    Mike

No Mike .... I'll install the latest software in the next few days ....... but I doubt the image will be improved
Nothing to do with transducers either but since you ask both have 200/83

    Nagg,

'Preferential'....very diplomatic mate. I must admit, I have had excellent service from BLA when required.

I am a bird man. Tried Lowrance on last boat LMS332c, and I was impressed with the quality of the reading. Clarity, definition etc. But I died....twice...under warranty. fair bit involved.

On the subject at hand. I now have the Humminbird 798c and I think the 'general imaging' is pretty much the same as the birds always have been....maybe better definition. I trust what I see on mine, and always have..with results. In particular on bass dams. Its just my confidence that improved given the knowledge I had from all previous models. I like the SI. Not yet mastered it in its entirety, but working on it. If I has a budget to spend in future on a sounder...I would find it tough to go past the birds for 'overall' value.

Might go and do some plugging for shimano too...you been giving my other love a hammering there too!! LOL....although I agree with what you have found.

    Cheers Stavros

    Hey Stavros
You're one of those mates I can point the finger at I've always valued your opinion.... up to now You're a bird man I know & ya probably dont like change ( used to the image)
I have no issue with the birds SI or downscan capability ...... all good - but it just doesn't cut the mustad as a traditional sounder IMO

Now go reply to the Shimano thread

    Cheers

Reason I asked was on my Lowrance and H'Bird you can manually set it to use 200 or 83 or 200 and 83. Setting it to one or the other give vastly different results on the screen in 2D mode.

Seriously Nagg whenever you put up these sorts of posts it really is pointless replying because you call crap to anybody who opposes your point of view.
Someone put up a suggestion that your software might want to be upgraded but thats virtually been written off without even trying it and even the title of the post is in the negative of Humminbirds.
You really only have one example in a bass dam and no evidence to back that up at all.Come to us with 50 or 100 comparison photos in fresh, salt, inshore, offshore, brackish, river and dam from the two different sounders in question and then sound off.(Pardon the pun)

Yeh , Wookie ..... I ran through all the different setting on transducers ....... probably spent a couple of hours over the weekend just adjusting the sounder

    Hi Toddy

I'm one step ahead on the software update - I was only speaking to a mate yesterday about it - he knows his birds but didn't think that I was going to gain a great improvement with the standard sounder image except some additions to the colour pallet & some other bits and pieces .
But It will be done this week! - so we'll see if there are any improvements

Please dont get your back up ..... but note - this is not a thread aimed at seeking assistance - It is a statement!!!! It is negative & that is what it is meant to be. with regard to the standard sounder feature!
I am a member of the Humminbird side imaging forum & there is little there that makes me think that I'm not seeing the best out of my 998SI in standard mode.

i've been around sounders long enough to know what I need to do to tune a unit & I also know that if a sounder cannot cut it in 40ft of fresh water - you wont see better in 40M of salt water . The situation where compared was ideal - specially since I knew what I was looking at.
Now since I spent the cash .... I'm going to do what I can to get the most out of my investment you can rest assured of that!. Sadly though - I just cant see how this old school humminbird image will ever match that of the current Lowrances (HDS) - If it does ......... Ausfish will be the first to know of it!

    hey ?

Not sure what you're trying to say there but whatever it is it's wrong. I've bought two from Manning River Marine in Taree fitted in the Stratos, one from Springwood Marine, one from Sundown Marine and one from Stones Corner Marine.

Never relied on anyone who is employed by BLA ..... ?
I would if I had a mate who worked there!

BTW ...... If anyone feels aggrieved by my comments on the performance of Humminbird units when used in traditional sounder mode (2D) - or that my comments are unjust. Please feel free to put up your best srceen shots with an explanation of what we are looking at. I'll be keen to see what members feel is a good Humminbird etching.

    I'm off to go fishing!!!

I will be interested in the comparison shots when you are next out. Will allow for a better explanation of what you are talking about. It will be something to consider when next I need to buy.

    Thanks

Furuno didn't have SI nor do they perform as well in shallow water
